Fleetwood Town have been promoted to League One for the first time in their history after beating 1-0 in an entertaining play-off final at Wembley.

Burton Albion keeper Dean Lyness had kept Fleetwood at bay in the opening minute with a fine double save but he turned from hero to villain late on as he let a long range Antoni Sarcevic effort sail over his head and into the net.

Fleetwood dominated possession for long periods of the match and created enough to make the game safe before Lyness’ decisive error. But Burton were not without chances of their own, Lee Bell and Billy Kee both missing good openings.

Victory for Fleetwood means an unprecedented sixth promotion in 10 seasons whilst Burton are left to ponder what might have been and face another season in League Two.

2’ – BRILLIANT DOUBLE SAVE LYNESS: The Burton keeper is called into action immediately to save his side. He claws away Ball’s effort headed into the top corner before saving a point blank header from Josh Morris.

15’ – FLEETWOOD PENALTY SHOUT: Blair forges into the box and goes to ground under a challenge from two Burton defenders. Michael Naylor waves play on.

24’ – FIERCE EFFORT FROM BELL: He lashes an effort on goal from just outside the box but Maxwell bats it down.

32’ – CHANCE FOR FLEETWOOD: Ball and Morris combine well down the left and it falls to Sarcevic but just gets stuck under his feet before he can pull the trigger.

56’ – CHANCE FOR KEE: he collects air with his first effort at a ball falling over his shoulder but it sits up nicely only for him to fire over.

71’ – CHANCE FOR BURTON: Hussey flashes a corner across the face of goal but Cansdell-Sherriff can’t get a decisive touch.

75’ – GOAL FLEETWOOD: It’s a horror misjudgement from Lyness as he sees Sarcevic’s free kick float beyond him.

Fleetwood's victory means an unprecedented sixth promotion in 10 seasons.

Antoni Sarcevic has now scored in three of his last four appearances for Fleetwood Town away from Highbury Stadium.

TALKING POINT: Hero to zero for Lyness. A fine double save kept his side in the game early on but by fine margins are matches won and lost and a momentary lapse cost him and his side dear.

Nathan Pond (Fleetwood): A rock at the heart of the Fleetwood defence kept Burton’s strike force from having much of a sniff all match in a tight affair.
