Ian Wright has explained why Leandro Trossard was such a smart signing for Arsenal to make after the winger registered three assists in their win over Fulham.

Trossard played a major part in Arsenal’s 3-0 win away at Craven Cottage. The January signing from Brighton set up goals for Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard. By doing so, he became the first ever Premier League player to record three assists in the first half of an away game.

Already, Trossard has contributed a total of five assists and one goal from 10 Arsenal appearances. He has helped preserve their momentum as the Premier League leaders after stepping up from Brighton.

Trossard was originally thought of as an alternative target to the younger Mykhaylo Mudryk, who ended up at Chelsea instead. The reaction to the change of plan was mixed at first, but those who saw the benefits of bringing the Belgian in are being proven right.

During coverage of Arsenal’s latest win, former striker Wright provided some insight as to why Trossard was the smarter signing all along.

“Since he has come, he has contributed right from the off,” Wright told Premier League Productions. “They couldn’t get near him, in his movement, whether he came in from the left or he came from the centre.

“He can get himself in this [goalscoring] position and not panic. When you consider the signings we were trying to make and we ended up getting someone like Trossard, it was a blessing.

“He has come into the team and he has hit the ground running.

“When you have a player of that calibre, who is a very, very good player. He has just come in, and the reason why he has hit the ground running is because he is up to speed with the Premier League. He knows exactly what’s needed.

“To get a signing like that, who can come in and be up to speed, it’s invaluable to us. He is showing that, from the first game until now. He has been an unbelievable addition to the squad.”

Trossard arrived at Arsenal on the back of seven goals from 17 games for Brighton in the first part of the season. Known for his versatility, he was identified as someone to turn to when their attack has required another dimension.

Against Fulham, his role was that of a centre-forward, in between Gabriel Martinelli on the left and Bukayo Saka on the right. His assists came from wide, though, including the opener from a corner and a couple of crosses in open play.

Clearly becoming a useful asset to Arsenal, Trossard is backing up why he felt he was capable of playing at a higher level.
