After the Washington NFL team officially announced July 13 that it would be retiring the Redskins name and logo, an obvious question emerged: What will the new team name be for the 2020 season and beyond?
On Thursday, Washington answered that question — sort of. It revealed the new temporary name will be the "Washington Football Team." This update is only a short-term solution until a permanent name is adopted.

The team does not plan to change its color scheme, but it will remove any Native American imagery or mentions of Redskins from its apparel.

"The decision to use 'Washington Football Team' for this season allows the franchise the ability to undertake an in-depth branding process to properly include player, alumni, fan, community, and sponsor input," the team said in a statement shared Thursday afternoon. "To date, we have been pleased to see so many people putting forward their vision of what the new name and design should be on their social media channels and we look forward to including their feedback as this process progresses."
Given that the updated team name is no team name at all, Washington opened itself up to plenty of mockery. And a certain Lakers superstar was happy to join the party.
LeBron James, who is set to play Thursday night in a scrimmage against the Mavericks, awoke from a pregame nap and immediately joked that Washington's front office must have spent a lot of time discussing the new name.
Just waking back up from my pregame nap to see about The Washington Football team??? . Is that real?? No way! Oh man they had a thorough intense long board meeting about that one huh. ♂️— LeBron James (@KingJames) July 23, 2020
Kevin Durant, a lifelong Washington fan, didn't appear to find the humor in James' tweet.
But KD was able to laugh it off later. When Washington football is involved, that's often all you can do.
Yo I was going to check on you but figured you didn’t wanna be bothered at the moment. @KDTrey5— LeBron James (@KingJames) July 23, 2020

Maybe Durant can choose a better option whenever he decides to buy the team.
