Leeds United are in contact with the agents of Italy forward, Wilfried Gnonto, while their offer to FC Zurich remains on the table, according to reports.

Amid their need for further depth up front, Leeds have been looking into a deal for Gnonto recently. The Italy international has been taking strides forward with his development while playing in Switzerland for Zurich.

Leeds have, as reported by Corriere Dello Sport, made an offer worth €5million (£4.2million) for Gnonto. According to the Italian newspaper, Zurich are considering it.

Their asking price for Gnonto up to this point has been closer to €8million (£6.7million). But they are clearly putting some thought into what Leeds have tabled. Soon, the Premier League side should receive their response.

In the meantime, Leeds are already at work to convince the player. They have increased their communications with his agent, who is also aware of interest from Feyenoord.

Coincidentally, Leeds have already signed a player from Feyenoord this summer, bringing in winger, Luis Sinisterra. Perhaps the Eredivisie side’s interest in Gnonto has come as a consequence.

But the Whites will be hoping to beat them to the youngster’s signature. In turn, they would have more support for main centre-forward, Patrick Bamford, while also benefitting from Gnonto’s ability to play as a winger or attacking midfielder.

Gnonto’s contract with Zurich is due to expire in 2023. For that reason, they are no longer able to command a high figure for his transfer.

Indeed, last summer, they are said to have rejected a bid worth at least €12million from Hoffenheim. Now, although Gnonto’s ability is rising, his market value is dropping.

It is something Leeds want to take advantage of. Within the coming days, they should have more of an idea if they are going to be successful.

Wilfried Gnonto would address one of Leeds United’s remaining needs

Leeds have struggled for depth up front over the past couple of seasons. It has been hard to find the right backup to Patrick Bamford, whose injury issues have therefore caused a headache.

Joe Gelhardt is coming through and looks to be a talent. With that in mind, Leeds have been wary not to block his progress.

But they cannot hide from the fact that they need more options up front. Relying on someone like Dan James as a centre-forward has not been overly effective in Bamford’s absence.

Giving more space to players with potential like Gelhardt or Gnonto could be a better choice. Therefore, Leeds will be eagerly awaiting the outcome of their bid.

If it is successful, they may well be making a shrewd signing. It has been a busy summer of incomings for them already, but Gnonto’s arrival could add to another area of need.
