Leeds confirm signing of long-term Tottenham target as Jesse Marsch gets midfielder in with potential £28.9m deal
Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United squad has been bolstered by the signing of USA midfielder Weston McKennie from Juventus.
Leeds have announced the capture of the 24-year-old on an initial loan from Juventus. They have the option to land him permanently at the end of the season, should he do well during his first spell in England.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Leeds have paid Juve £1.05m (€1.2m) to sign McKennie for the remainder of the season, while their purchase option stands at £28.9million (€33m).
Leeds have announced that McKennie will wear the number 28 shirt. And Leeds fans could see him in action for the first time when they play Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday.
McKennie, who has been heavily linked with Tottenham in the past 12 months, becomes the third American to join Leeds. He will play alongside USA team-mates Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson at Elland Road. Of course, manager Marsch is their compatriot too.
McKennie becomes Leeds’ third signing of the winter transfer window. They have already brought in centre-back Max Wober from Red Bull Salzburg and broken their transfer record by landing Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim for £35.5m.
And there could be another new Leeds arrival before the window closes. Teenage centre-half Diogo Monteiro passed a medical in West Yorkshire earlier on Monday and is set to be announced as a Leeds player.
Monteiro will replace Diego Llorente in Marsch’s squad, as the 29-year-old is on the verge of joining Italian side Roma.
