A Jamie Carragher prediction could ring true as Leeds United are reportedly plotting a move for Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic.
Chelsea parted with just under £58million to sign Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund in January 2019. He spent the remainder of the 2018-19 season back on loan at Dortmund before linking up with the Chelsea squad that summer.
Pulisic has gone on to make 128 appearances for the Blues in all competitions, registering 28 goals and 21 assists.
He has shown glimpses of his talent in the famous blue shirt but hasn’t often done it for a prolonged period.
This season, Pulisic has found the net once in 10 matches. That goal came in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over relegation-threatened Wolves on October 8.
Pulisic is now on his third Chelsea manager in the form of Graham Potter. The English tactician has shown he is able to get the best out of players from his time at Brighton.
There is the potential for Potter to do this with Pulisic. However, reports are now suggesting the attacker will not stick around in west London long enough for Potter to work his magic.
According to Goal’s live transfer blog (October 27, at 14:45), which cites reports in Spain, Pulisic has become a target for Leeds.
Goal state one of the reasons he could leave Chelsea is that he is sometimes being used as a wing-back by Potter. Pulisic would rather operate further forward to help him get among the goals.
The USA international also wants to ‘reignite his career’, which may only happen if he secures a transfer elsewhere.
Leeds pursuit of Chelsea man revealed
The original report claims Leeds have shown a ‘great interest’ in capturing Pulisic from Chelsea. Such a move would see them tread a familiar transfer path by bringing another American to Elland Road.
Leeds are managed by former Chicago and D.C United player Jesse Marsch. Plus, Pulisic’s USA team-mates Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson are in their squad.
Perhaps Leeds could attract Pulisic to West Yorkshire by offering him the ability to work alongside some of his compatriots.
Leeds do have competition for the 24-year-old’s signature. The original report names Newcastle, AC Milan and Juventus as other potential suitors.
These clubs all have big pull power in their own ways. Milan and Juve are illustrious Serie A clubs with massive trophy cabinets, while Newcastle are on the up under Eddie Howe.
Leeds will have to put on a serious charm offensive – and offer Pulisic as much money as they can – if they are to win the race for him.
Jamie Carragher discusses Christian Pulisic future
On Tuesday, Carragher gave his verdict on Pulisic’s future. He told the star to consider moving away from Chelsea and join a smaller club so he can get back to his best. A switch to Leeds could therefore be perfect.
“100 per cent [Pulisic should consider a smaller club],” Carragher said on CBS Sports. “A lot of footballers are different, I do scratch my head when I see certain players at clubs for a long time and they never really get into the team.
“And that’s why I think Thierry [Henry] is saying he respects Timo Werner. Rather than just sitting on the bench another year or two he’s gone back to somewhere where he’s going to play week in, week out.
“And I just think Pulisic is sort of at that stage now where there’s been a few managerial changes. It looks like he’s getting more of a chance with Potter, but not just him, I think Graham Potter is a manager who changes it every game so everyone is getting a chance.
“So he may feel like he’s getting more of an opportunity to prove to the manager he can be in that recognised 11.
Pulisic facing big career decision
“But he’s been there a few years now, it hasn’t quite happened for him for whatever reason, and maybe Dortmund is a level down from Chelsea who are a team who are trying to win the Champions League – we know Pulisic was part of that win.
“But eventually you have to make that decision. I don’t think you can continue to be in that position that he’s been in for the last two or three years.”
Pulisic will obviously have big pride and will believe he can shine at Chelsea. He will not want to drop out of the Champions League by joining Leeds, either.
But Carragher does bring up some good points. At 24, Pulisic is heading towards his prime years.
He does not want to spend those in and out of the first team. He should be a regular and one of the most important players in the starting eleven. The way things are going, that will only happen if he leaves Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Marsch has responded to questions about his potential Leeds sacking during his Thursday press conference.
