Leeds are beginning to accept that they will probably have to sell Kalvin Phillips this summer but it won’t be to Man Utd, according to reports.

Phillips has been a key cog in the Leeds team that was promoted from the Championship in 2019/20 and subsequently took the Premier League by storm in their first season back in the top flight after a 16-year absence.

The midfielder has struggled for fitness this campaign as the Yorkshire outfit narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of this season.

Phillips, who is now an important member of Gareth Southgate’s England squad after starring at Euro 2020, only managed to start 18 Premier League matches for Leeds this campaign.

His talent has alerted a number of top Premier League clubs with Man Utd and Man City the main two sides linked with his services in recent weeks.

However, The Athletic insists that sources have told them that Phillips is ‘not a genuine option’ for Man Utd and that a transfer to Man City would ‘offer a much more palatable, and realistic, destination across the Pennines’.

Sources have also told The Athletic that Leeds ‘sound increasingly resigned to losing the England international this summer’ with other reports valuing him at around £60m.

Jude Bellingham is still at the ‘top’ of the ‘wishlist at Man Utd for central midfielders, although any move would be next summer, with The Athletic ruling out a transfer for Declan Rice, while there are ‘concerns’ over N’Golo Kante’s injury record.

Frenkie de Jong is the most likely signing in that area but many Man Utd supporters will be hoping the club can bring in a more defensive-minded midfielder like Phillips.

There have been reports that De Jong could be reluctant to join the Red Devils without Champions League football and former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson thinks it “says a lot” about Man Utd’s current status.

Robinson told Football Insider: “It is a very hard deal to do. It is unusual territory for Manchester United. Typically, when United come knocking players want to join. They’d walk there in the past.

“It shows where the club is now that players are reluctant to join. If Barcelona say he can go and he refuses it says a lot.

“De Jong’s relationship with Ten Hag may help the situation. He may be able to persuade him. You do question whether it is the right move though if the player doesn’t really want to come.”
