Leeds United have confirmed the signing of England U18 striker Sonny Perkins, although they still have work to do to agree a deal with West Ham for him.

Perkins spent time in the Leyton Orient youth system before joining West Ham’s academy in January 2019. He went on to impress in the Hammers’ U18 and U23 sides, as well as making three senior appearances for the east London outfit.

Perkins became a free agent on July 1 following the end of his West Ham scholarship. David Moyes’ team had offered him a professional contract but this was rejected.

West Ham were angered by the decision and went on to release the following statement: “The club is disappointed with Perkins’ representatives and strongly believe he was approached to sign for another club which led to him asking to be released from his scholarship at West Ham United.

“West Ham United take this matter very seriously – we believe the rules and structures in place at the Football Association and Premier League should be upheld at all times.”

Perkins will now join up with Leeds U21s after penning a three-year contract at Elland Road.

He becomes Jesse Marsch’s seventh signing of the summer transfer window thus far.

Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen, Marc Roca, Darko Gyabi, Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra have all joined the Whites already.

Leeds, West Ham talks for Sonny Perkins continue

Despite Leeds announcing the move, they have yet to agree a deal with West Ham. Negotiations are ongoing as West Ham are due compensation for helping to develop the teenager.

If the two Premier League sides cannot agree on a fee, then the case will go to a tribunal.

Perkins becomes the second piece of transfer business Leeds have taken part in today (Tuesday). Central midfielder Jamie Shackleton will continue his development at Millwall after joining the Championship club on a season-long loan.

Leeds could still take part in more discussions after setting their sights on Paris Saint-Germain player Arnaud Kalimuendo.

French source Media Foot have given an update on Kalimuendo’s situation and what PSG boss Christopher Galtier thinks of him.
