Leeds United have reportedly made a lowball offer for Fenerbahce striker Mergim Berisha.

It has been a rather busy summer transfer window for Leeds United. They have lost two of their best players in the shape of Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha. But there have also been plenty of arrivals at Elland Road.

So far, Leeds have added Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen, Marc Roca, Darko Gyabi, Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra. There has also been the acquisition of Sonny Perkins for the youth ranks.

Work continues on finding another forward to support the likes of Patrick Bamford. In that regard, they have been chasing a big-money move for Charles De Ketelaere. However, the Club Brugge attacker may prefer to join AC Milan, despite their offer to his employers not being as good as that from Leeds as of yet.

A resolution to the De Ketelaere saga should arrive imminently. Regardless, it may make sense for the Whites to be exploring alternatives. One attacker on their radar could be Mergim Berisha.

The 24-year-old was born in Germany but began his football development in Austria with RB Salzburg. After a spell with their feeder team FC Liefering and enduring three loan spells away, he represented them at senior level from January 2020 to September 2021.

Since then, Berisha has been playing in Turkey for Fenerbahce. His record for them so far reads seven goals and three assists from 31 appearances.

According to SPOR journalist Omer Celikbasli, Berisha has caught the attention of Leeds. In fact, they have offered a transfer fee of €2million (£1.7m) for his services.

However, Fenerbahce have already asked Bundesliga pair Stuttgart and Mainz for €5m (£4.3m) amid their own interest. Hence, Leeds would likely need to raise their bid.

Mergim Berisha would represent continuation of Leeds United transfer theme

Whether Berisha would be worth it or not is something they will have to decide upon. His goal record for Fenerbahce was not outstanding in his debut season there.

But his form for RB Salzburg was better; he managed 22 goals and 13 assists from 56 games for them.

During his time with the club, he worked with current Leeds boss Jesse Marsch. During the 2020-21 season – Marsch’s last campaign with Salzburg – Berisha scored 14 goals and made 10 assists from 28 Austrian Bundesliga matches.

It was the most prolific campaign of his career so far. Therefore, Marsch may know how to get the best out of the 24-year-old.

That said, all of Leeds’ signings so far this summer have no Premier League experience. Although many understand what it takes to play for Marsch, the strategy could be somewhat risky.

Of course, Raphinha had never played in England before he joined Leeds, and that spell went well. But there could be risk as well as reward for Leeds’ current strategy.

At less than £5m, though, it would be hard to go wrong for someone with Champions League experience, so perhaps Berisha could be one to consider.
