It was Isaac Schmidt's dream to come and play in English football. But the full-back has found regular first team football hard to come by since joining Leeds United in a £2.5m deal from Swiss side St Gallen on deadline day.

We are over a third of the way through the season and Schmidt is still waiting to make his first Championship start. The 24-year-old has featured four times off the bench.

Schmidt, who penned a four-year contract, has been absent for the past couple of matches after undergoing minor hernia surgery during the international break. In an interview with Switzerland’s 20 Minuten, via Sport Witness, Schmidt insists he has no regrets over moving to Elland Road.

“I was very well received," he said. "When I arrived here, I found mentors who helped me settle in. They explained everything to me. The team is good, very welcoming. I didn’t necessarily expect that.

“Because we know that, when you reach the highest level, it can quickly become every man for himself. But not here, and I’m happy to be here.”

Despite his lack of game time, Schmidt is excited for the future. He said: “I’m already happy to have had a few minutes of play.

“Me, being able to come in and contribute offensively – in all the matches I played, I played right winger! That’s already really cool. I know that I have to take a step forward and that I’m going to have to fight for my place. Nothing is ever a given in football.”
