More than 500 students and staff at the University of Leeds have tested positive for coronavirus.

The university said 558 cases have been reported among staff and students since the start of term on September 28.

Three staff members are among those who have tested positive for Covid-19, and the latest figures show more than half of the cases have been reported since the beginning of October.

Vice chancellor Professor Simone Buitendijk said "extensive support measures" have been put in place for students.

"We are acutely aware that behind each number is an individual with their own needs and concerns, and ensuring the safety, health and wellbeing of everyone is our absolute priority," she said.

"This is a difficult time for our students and their families and friends, our staff, and the community that we work and live in. We are all aware that our city is seeing rising transmission rates and is subject to extra restrictions.

"By working together, we can all play a part in keeping each other safe.

"We encourage students to let us know if they are self-isolating or have received a positive test as soon as possible and to access the extensive support measures the University and Leeds University Union have put in place.

"We are contacting them by email and telephone to provide reassurance, information about sources of support and practical assistance."

The university, which has more than 38,000 students and 9,200 members of staff, said it is providing a "support package" to students who are self-isolating which includes food and toiletries, financial help, and counselling appointments.

Around 70 universities have experienced outbreaks over the past three weeks, with more than 4,000 students in self-isolation.

It comes after Sheffield University reported 474 coronavirus cases, while another 400 students tested positive at the University of Nottingham in one week.

In Nottingham, the figures included 226 students in private accommodation and 106 others living in halls of residence, while eight members of staff were also classed as "active confirmed cases".

Elsewhere, 380 coronavirus cases have been logged at Manchester University, and 770 students have tested positive at Northumbria University.
