Leeds Utd transfer news: ‘Firm interest’ confirmed in attacker with 25 goals this season
Leeds United are looking at Austin FC striker Sebastian Driussi, according to a couple of sources, and seem to be one of the main contenders for his signature.
It might be important for Leeds to find further attacking quality in the January transfer window. They have not scored as many goals as they should have this season, which has put Patrick Bamford in particular under pressure.
There are some promising younger attackers in their squad, but maybe they could benefit from having another more senior option.
In that regard, one man who appears to be on their radar is Sebastian Driussi. He currently plays for Austin FC in the MLS, but has previously played in Europe with Zenit St. Petersburg.
CBS Sports reporter Nico Cantor recently revealed Leeds were keen to sign Driussi. Now, Cesar Luis Merlo has confirmed there is a “firm interest” coming from the West Yorkshire side.
However, they face competition from two unnamed German clubs, whose interest is albeit at a less advanced stage.
CBS Sports‘ previous claim warned of competition from within the Premier League as well.
A former River Plate youngster, Driussi has never featured in English football. However, at the age of 26, the time could be right for him to test himself.
Sebastian Driussi could get chance on a bigger stage
After scoring 25 goals in all competitions during 2022 – including 22 from 34 appearances in the league – Driussi has established himself as one of the best forwards in the MLS. Perhaps he could thrive on a bigger stage.
Able to play as an attacking midfielder or as a focal point himself, he could in theory replace Bamford as a starting striker or feature in support of him.
Neither CBS Sports nor Merlo have been able to reveal how much it might cost to sign Driussi. He is under contract with Austin until December 2024, although his current employers can extend his contract by one year should they wish.
Any such measure would seemingly be to protect his market value, though. It appears Driussi could be on his way to Europe sooner than Austin have him tied down until.
Whether Leeds will be the ones to welcome him remains to be seen. But there seems to be some confidence that they might have a decent chance.
After signing a couple of USMNT players from European clubs in the summer, it would be interesting to see Leeds go into the MLS market for a South American player.
In theory, Jesse Marsch could have some reliable sources back in his native country, pointing out how well Austin’s 2021 signing has been doing.
If Driussi is able to replicate his talents in the Premier League, Leeds would be hoping to benefit.
