Leeds United reportedly face a battle to retain the services of Luis Sinisterra in the future amid claims he is high on the wanted list of Italian giants AC Milan.
The Whites paid around £21.4m to bring the Colombian star to Elland Road from Feyenoord this summer. Seen as the replacement for Raphinha, who joined Barcelona, the winger arrives in West Yorkshire on the back of an excellent season. Indeed, he scored 23 times in 39 appearances as the Rotterdam club reached the UEFA Conference League final.
The fee that Leeds have paid is a record transfer received for the Eredivisive club. As such, their general manager Dennis te Kloese has welcomed his sale, explaining how it will pave the way for future transfers.
Despite the pressure that comes with replacing such a leading light, Sinisterra has shown no signs of being fazed by the step up. And the winger has started his time with the Whites in excellent form, scoring three times – and all from outside the area – for Leeds.
And while generally prefering to play on the opposite flank to Raphinha, it appears that Leeds have found themselves another transfer bargain.
However, it may concern Leeds that his form is already beginning to alert some European heavyweights.
Leeds were locked in a summer transfer with AC Milan for Belgian star Charles De Ketelaere. The lure of the Champions League ultimately saw Milan overpower Leeds to the deal. However, they remained in the hunt with Milan struggling to agree a fee with Club Brugges.
Now it seems AC Milan could be ready to upset Leeds again with a future move for Sinisterra.
Milan tracking Luis Sinisterra
The Colombian winger is reportedly on the Italian giants’ wanted list should they lose one of their own star men. Like any well-managed club, they have a list of potential targets for all their senior stars.
And it seems Sinisterra is reportedly on theirs, according to Italian journalist Carlo Pellegatti.
Speaking to Numero Diaz, he believes Milan are very much looking at Sinisterra should they lose Rafael Leao.
The Portugal attacker was strongly linked with Chelsea this summer, that deal ultimately coming to nothing. Should Chelsea come calling, though, with a giant future offer, Milan would certainly struggle not to accept such a proposal.
“If unfortunately, and let’s hope not, Leao had to leave, a player I would like and who looks a lot like him is Sinisterra, today at Leeds.”
Sinisterra is a player, it transpires, that Milan have been watching progress for some time. And they will also be keeping a close watch on his progress at Leeds as he takes that next step in his career.
Leeds have no reason to worry – yet
Leeds United will unlikely have a problem any time soon as far as Sinisterra is concerned. He is tied on a long contract at Leeds until 2027 following his summer arrival.
At the time of his signing, he outlined his ambitions for Leeds and their supporters.
Part of that mantra was a wish to ‘make them happy’; a quick-fire exit would be a sure-fire way to do a U-turn on this.
That said, as it stands, the Leeds business model is one that can allow their top players to move on, only for the club to reinvest in their side.
Indeed, in allowing Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha to depart this summer, the Whites were able to make five senior signings.
Alongside Sinisterra, Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams and Marc Roca have all made a positive impact. Rasmus Kristensen is another pricey signing, though he is yet to hit top form for the Whites.
As such, it isn’t out of the question that Milan may launch a future raid for Sinisterra.
Much of course will depend on the future of Leao. Also linked with Manchester City, the Portugal star is rated in the £100m bracket.
And armed with that cash in the event of his sale, a move for Luis Sinisterra cannot be ruled out.
That’s down the line though and for Leeds they hope their new star can pose a few problems for Manchester United in their next scheduled fixture on Sunday.
