Leeds United are edging closer to their third new signing of the January transfer window with a deal close to being finalised for a Victor Orta target.
The Whites have acted swiftly to bolster their squad this month with left-sided defender Maximilian Wober and attacker Georginio Rutter joining the cause. And Wober has quickly made his impact felt at Elland Road, putting in a man of the match displays during Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Brentford.
Indeed, having been on the field for 201 minutes, Leeds are yet to concede with Wober on the field. And they will hope the Austrian provides them with a new defensive solidity much missed since their return to the Premier League.
Rutter, meanwhile, will provide another option in attack which is now hoping to have a fully fit Patrick Bamford also back in the fold.
Leeds, however, are a man lighter in midfield. Popular Poland star Mateusz Klich last week finalised a move to DC United, ending his memorable stint at Elland Road.
And Jesse Marsch’s side are reportedly looking to bolster the area with a number of options being considered.
Indeed, the Whites are reportedly among the sides pursuing a deal to sign Angers star Azzzedine Ounahi. The Moroccan underlined his qualities with an exceptional World Cup as his nation made history reaching the semi-finals.
However, despite Leeds reportedly tabling the highest bid, it seems Ounahi favours a move to Napoli.
Leeds, though, do seemingly have other irons in the fire. And reports on Tuesday suggest they in contact with Juventus over a deal for USA star Weston McKennie.
The American partnered Leeds favourite Tyler Adams during the USA’s World Cup campaign. As such, the signing of McKennie would be a big coup for Leeds if they were to secure his signing.
Leeds closing on Diogo Monteiro signing
However, their next signing of the January window looks increasingly likely to be in the defensive department.
To that end, reports last week how Leeds were showing an interest in signing Portuguese star Diogo Monteiro.
The Portugal youth defender plys his trade at Servette in Switzerland. And having earned rave reviews this season, the Whites are looking to prise the 17-year-old to Elland Road.
His signing would be with one eye on the future, but it is one that director of football Victor Orta is keen to get done.
Brexit rules means Leeds cannot officially open talks for his signing until Monteiro turns 18. But with his birthday falling on January 28, Leeds are hopeful of securing his signing before the window closes next Tuesday.
Providing an update on the interest in Monteiro, as well as their hunt for a new midfielder, Leeds oracle Phil Hay revealed the latest.
“There hasn’t been much progress on that [midfield] front in the last week or so,” he told the Phil Hay Show. “There hasn’t been any kind of movement.
Transfer likely for Leeds
“What does look likely is a move for Diogo Monteiro, the Portuguese defender from Servette in Switzerland.
“He turns 18 shortly which will allow Leeds to make an offer formal and to get that one done. I think there is a high likelihood that he will come in before the end of the window.”
The signing of Monteiro will be another coup for Orta and Leeds will hope he has a similar impact to their last capture from Switzerland: Willy Gnonto.
The teenager moved to Elland Road over the summer for an initial £5.1m fee. And Gnonto has hit the ground running at Leeds, quickly becoming a massive crowd favourite with his direct running and eye for a goal.
However, the capture of Monteiro will accelerate speculation linking another young defender Charlie Cresswell with a move away from Leeds.
The 20-year-old has been on loan at Millwall this season, but reports suggest Leeds are willing to sell him on a permanent basis to another Championship side.
