Leeds vs Chelsea LIVE!

Chelsea took a huge step towards officially sealing a top-four spot and left 10-man Leeds deeper in the relegation mire with a comfortable 3-0 win at Elland Road.

Mason Mount’s early strike and second-half goals from Christian Pulisic and Romelu Lukaku halted Chelsea’s three-game winless run and lifted them four points clear of London rivals Arsenal in third place.

It was a timely win for Thomas Tuchel’s side, who had dropped 10 points in their previous five matches, before Saturday’s FA Cup final against Liverpool.

For Leeds, it was another night to forget. They slumped to a third straight defeat to remain in the bottom three and had a man sent off for the second time in successive matches.

Jesse Marsch’s side played for 66 minutes with 10 men after Dan James’ straight red card for his ill-judged lunge on Mateo Kovacic.

James’ dismissal followed a similar rush of blood by team-mate Luke Ayling in Sunday’s defeat at Arsenal and Leeds subsequently never threatened to add to their points tally.

Match report

22:29 , Matt Verri

Chelsea put themselves on the brink of Champions League qualification to send them into Saturday’s FA Cup Final with the pressure eased from their shoulders.

A 3-0 win against 10-men Leeds means they need just one point from their remaining two games to secure a top four finish. It should never have come to this, with the hangover from their Champions League elimination at the hands of Real Madrid last month sending them into an end of season spiral.

But Thomas Tuchel can breathe more easily now – and this victory, only their second in their last six games, could provide the perfect tonic ahead of their Wembley showdown with Liverpool.

While they cannot hope for Jurgen Klopp’s quadruple-chasers to provide anything like as flimsy opposition as Jesse Marsch’s sorry side, the confidence of a dominant performance could be telling.

More from Mount...

21:55 , Matt Verri

“We spoke about how big this week was at the beginning - it didn’t start well obviously last Saturday.

“We needed a bounce back, we had a few days to get together and speak within the group. Some truths that needed to be said and we got that out of our system.

“This was a game where we could get going, we know what’s coming up next. It’s a massive, massive game and this is a good step towards that.

“It’s all exciting. Speaking a bit about every game being a final and the next game is one - we’re ready and it’s time for us to try and win one.”

Mason Mount’s post-match reaction

21:51 , Matt Verri

“It was a fun one, I do love playing here.

“It’s a stadium with a lot of history, the fans are brilliant. They don’t like us too much, so it was a brilliant atmosphere.

“As soon as we got the goal, we kind of quietened the stadium down a bit and then we could play our stuff. That was what the objective was.

“I was reading the programme before the game and it said ‘make the stadium as hard to play in as possible’.

“When you come here, you know it’s going to be tough. But we loved it - it was a massive game for both teams tonight.

“It wasn’t just them, it was us as well. We needed the win after a few poor results. It was a bounce-back game, and now Liverpool on Saturday.”

Player ratings

21:42 , Matt Verri

Reece James 9

A huge threat all night - powering down the wing to open Leeds up. Made Mount’s opener and a host more chances before playing a part in Pulisic’s goal too.

Mason Mount 9

A brilliant performance, with a wonderful goal that put Chelsea on their way to victory and then a clever flick to set up Pulisic. Heavily involved in linking their attacks. A display full of menace.

Christian Pulisic 7

Got plenty on the ball as he drifted inside and dropped deep to pick up possession and link play. Brilliant finish to put Chelsea two up.

It had been coming...

21:34 , Matt Verri

FT: Leeds 0-3 Chelsea

21:25 , Matt Verri

Mount, Pulisic, Lukaku - job done for Chelsea.

James’ red card made it an almost impossible task for Leeds and they never looked like getting anything from the match.

21:22 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Three minutes added on... Leeds would have been very happy to just hear the whistle.

21:21 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Klich volleys an effort at goal, weak and Chelsea can break again.

Ziyech looks to put it on a plate for Lukaku again, Llorente is there this time to hack it away.

21:18 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Still so much space for Chelsea, who aren’t keen on slowing down.

Loftus-Cheek bursts forward, plays it wide to Ziyech. Curling effort from distance is just wide.

GOAL! Leeds 0-3 Chelsea | Romelu Lukaku 83’

Llorente loses it in a terrible position and Chelsea are away. Ziyech squares it for Lukaku, who takes an absolute age to get the shot away.

There’s four Leeds shirts in the way by that point, but he still hammers it into the back of the net.

21:12 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek, Mount, Alonso, Lukaku... blocked and wide.

Another great move from the Blues, once again Lukaku can’t take his chance though. How has he not scored?!

21:10 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Raphinha is back up and continuing for now.... but Gelhardt is on to replace him at the next stoppage. Leeds need to hope he isn’t ruled out of the last two matches. Brazilian isn’t happy at all about coming off.

Chelsea make their last two changes - James and Pulisic off, Ziyech and Azpilicueta on.

21:07 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Surely not...

Raphinha is now down for Leeds off the ball. This really couldn’t have gone any worse for them tonight.

James will now be out with suspension, Harrison went off injured, and now this. Madness.

21:05 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Match might feel like it is won, but Tuchel is still as animated as ever. Screaming at his players when there’s any hint of sloppiness.

A Leeds goal now would certainly change how this match looked...

James Robson at Elland Road

21:03 , Matt Verri

Tuchel may look to make at least one more change now the game looks to be won. Does he want to risk injury to someone like Reece James ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup Final? It’s notable that Azpilicueta is doing some extensive warm ups.

21:02 , Matt Verri

70 mins: A Leeds attack! Rodrigo brings the ball forward and plays it wide to Firpo.

He whips the cross in with plenty of pace, Raphinha heads it well over the bar. Their best moment in quite some time.

21:00 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Mount wide to James, his cut-back into the box is deflected behind for a corner.

It will be Mount to take... barely gets off the ground. Will assume that wasn’t quite the plan.

20:57 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Lukaku wants his goal!

He rolls Cooper and he’s away, driving towards the box. Pulisic is screaming for it, Lukaku works it onto his left foot though and goes for goal from outside the box himself. Drags it wide.

20:54 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Leeds cannot put more than a couple of passes together - their focus probably has to now turn to their final two league matches.

Tuchel meanwhile can rest whoever he wants for the last 30 minutes, should he want to look ahead to the FA Cup final.

20:51 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Chelsea win it back high up the pitch, Pulisic curls an effort at goal... just wide.

This could be any score Chelsea want. Klich on to replace Bate for Leeds.

James Robson at Elland Road

20:50 , Matt Verri

That was a beautifully-worked goal from Chelsea, with a finish from Pulisic to rival Mount’s opener.

Amid the chaos of Leeds’ tackling, Chelsea have injected calm authority into this game.

Now it should be a case of just seeing it out and hoping to avoid any further reckless challenges from their desperate opponents.

20:49 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Game being played at walking pace now, Leeds look to have accepted their fate.

Still 35 minutes left... Chelsea should be able to enjoy every single one of them.

GOAL! Leeds 0-2 Chelsea | Christian Pulisic 55'

20:47 , Matt Verri

Superb move and that should really be that. James plays the ball inside to Jorginho, who finds Mount on the edge of the box.

Brilliant flick to lay it off to Pulisic, and he then curls a low effort into the corner. Meslier had no chance.

20:44 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Chance for Leeds to break!

A rare one too. Raphinha has Rodrigo free to his left, but tries to bundle his way through Christensen and Rudiger instead. Can’t find a way through. Leeds have to make the most of those moments, it was two-on-two.

Loftus-Cheek then sends a tame effort wide for the visitors.

20:43 , Matt Verri

51 mins: James and Mount both with loose touches to lose possession - right in front of Tuchel. He’s not impressed.

Leeds quickly give it back though, and the Chelsea back-three can enjoy some more comfortable passes between each other.

20:41 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Lukaku should score!

He’s had some really good chances tonight. Mount puts a great ball into the box, Lukaku is free but sends his header over the bar. Was slightly behind the striker, he should still have done a lot better though.

20:40 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Leeds looking to push up at the start of the half, pressure is on Raphinha and Rodrigo to deliver something in attack.

Not quite like that... Raphinha sends the ball straight out of play.

Back underway!

20:37 , Matt Verri

Here we go again at Elland Road.

Deja vu...

20:32 , Matt Verri

How Chelsea made a perfect start...

20:29 , Matt Verri

James Robson at Elland Road

20:24 , Matt Verri

Chelsea might wonder how they haven’t put Leeds to bed after taking the lead so early on. But, perhaps their greatest concern is avoiding injury after some reckless stuff from the home side.

Dan James is off for vicious tackle on Kovacic that forced Chelsea into a substitution and leaves them sweating over the midfielder’s fitness for Saturday.

But even a goal and a man up, they need to kill Leeds off or risk the anxiety of a fightback. That said, all Leeds seem to want to do is fight right now.

HT: Leeds 0-1 Chelsea

20:22 , Matt Verri

And that’s half-time at Elland Road.

Chelsea took control in the opening minutes when Mount fired them in front, and that has only become more dominant since James saw red for a terrible challenge on Kovacic.

It’s only 1-0, but it looks a massive task for Leeds to get anything from this one.

20:20 , Matt Verri

45+5 mins: Mount has been superb for Chelsea, keeps popping up in space and Leeds cannot get near him.

James pulls back Firpo, that will just be a free-kick but the referee is over to warn him.

20:18 , Matt Verri

45+3 mins: Chelsea just knocking the ball around with complete ease at the end of the half.

While it’s only 1-0 though, Leeds are in the match. They showed at the Emirates that even with ten men they can cause sides problems.

20:16 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Six minutes added on at the end of a stop-start half.

It’s been another problematic one for Leeds.

20:14 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Horrible challenge from Phillips, yellow card for the midfielder.

He gives the ball away, Pulisic is then driving away and Phillips lunges in to hack him down. Not even close to the ball.

Pulisic not particularly impressed with the Leeds man helping him to his feet either.

20:12 , Matt Verri

42 mins: WHAT A SAVE!

Stand down, stand down... offside flag goes up. Was still a lovely move and a brilliant save.

Lukaku flicks it round the corner to James, who squares it for Pulisic. He looks certain to score from close range but Meslier is up to the task.

20:11 , Matt Verri

41 mins: We’re back underway at Elland Road. Hopefully the fans has received the necessary treatment.

Will be at least three or four minutes added on when we get to the end of this half.

20:08 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Firpo does indeed replace Harrison - that’s seen Raphinha move further forward.

Play has been stopped, looks like a medical situation in the Chelsea end.

20:06 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Just because things weren’t miserable enough for Leeds, Harrison has gone down off the ball.

Firpo is getting ready to come on, looks like Harrison’s night could be over. Another huge blow for the home side.

20:04 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Leeds aren’t getting a touch now - going to be a long night at this rate.

And it’s very nearly 2-0! James clips a lovely cross into the box, Lukaku on the end of it and powers the header towards the far corner. Just wide. Meslier didn’t move.

James Robson at Elland Road

20:02 , Matt Verri

That might be offside, but it was a quality finish from Lukaku and another sign of his confidence returning.

20:01 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Lukaku has the ball in the back of the net but it won’t count.

Ball played over the top, he’s too strong for Llorente and then lifts the ball perfectly over Meslier and into the corner.

He was just beyond the last defender though.

James Robson at Elland Road

20:00 , Matt Verri

Tuchel didn’t want to tempt fate when asked about the danger of Leeds being reckless tonight.

He said: “I know what you are referring to because we see it in their last games: big physicality, they take huge risk in challenges which is fair enough. But I don’t feel comfortable in predicting this in our game.”

Loftus-Cheek is coming on and Chelsea will have to hope the injury to Kovacic doesn’t rule him out on Saturday.

19:59 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Rudiger kicks the ball out, as Kovacic goes down. He hasn’t recovered from that challenge.

Loftus-Cheek is ready to come on for the visitors to replace the Croatian.

19:57 , Matt Verri

27 mins: It’s a terrible challenge from James, in an area of the pitch were his side were under no pressure. Entirely pointless and it’s really cost his side.

Home fans furious, as is Jesse Marsch. They can have no complaints.

19:55 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Loose touch from Kovacic, James decides to throw himself into the challenge.

Gets the ball but the follow through is really high, catches Kovacic and it certainly is a dangerous tackle. That won’t be overturned.

19:54 , Matt Verri

Dan James has been shown a straight red - it’s an absolute disaster for the hosts.

19:52 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Mount not exactly a popular man at Elland Road... even less so as he walks over to the fans to retrieve a ball.

Not sure that will be bothering him too much, after another goal against Leeds.

James Robson at Elland Road

19:50 , Matt Verri

This feels like an important moment in the match for the home side. Leeds have avoided going under after that early setback and there is no shortage of ambition from them.

The home crowd feel like they are on the edge. They need their side to give them some encouragement, while Chelsea have not made the most of their start.

19:49 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Decent delivery from Phillips, Chelsea clear it but it’s out for a corner. Leeds can keep the pressure on.

Taken short, eventually whipped in by James. Headed out to Bate who volleys it back in, drops to Llorente and he fires wide. Much better from Leeds though.

19:47 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Raphinha tasked with sending a long-throw into the Chelsea.

Distinct lack of length on it... Leeds would be well served not opting for that for the rest of the match.

Kovacic slides in on James, this time the hosts do get the decision.

19:46 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Leeds taking risks in possession at the back but going nowhere by doing so.

Eventually they do manage to play it into midfield, comes to James and he knocks it past Rudiger and goes down. Referee waves away the appeals.

19:43 , Matt Verri

13 mins: All so easy for Chelsea, as Kovacic turns out of trouble and plays it to Mount who has so much space.

Out wide to James, he skips past his man and crosses it into the box. Pulisic gets on the end of it but can only loop the header straight up.

19:40 , Matt Verri

10 mins: OFF THE LINE!

Ball is rolling harmlessly through to Meslier, but Koch hacks at it and Leeds are under pressure again.

Pulisic into the box, cuts it back for Mount... cleared off the line. Seconds later Lukaku fires an effort at goal, blocked. Leeds hanging on.

19:39 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Better from Raphinha, who whips a first-time pass in behind the Chelsea defence. Mendy quickly off his line to clear.

Leeds work it back to Raphinha, and he cuts it back into the box. Falls to James, who takes too long to get a shot away and the chance goes.

James Robson at Elland Road

19:37 , Matt Verri

That’s a perfect start for Chelsea.

Leeds look so vulnerable. It was Mount who finished with a sweet shot, but Chelsea players were queuing up for James to square to them in the box.

This could be a long night for the home side.

19:36 , Matt Verri

6 mins: ALMOST TWO!

This is a mess from Leeds. All the problems coming down the right for Chelsea.

Jorginho plays Mount in, he fires a low ball across the face of goal... Lukaku can’t reach it on the stretch.

GOAL! Leeds 0-1 Chelsea | Mason Mount 4'

19:34 , Matt Verri

Wasn’t much control about that from Leeds. So simple for Chelsea, Mount playing it out wide to James.

The wing-back lays it back to Mount, who whips it into the top corner at the near post from the edge of the box. Wonderful finish.

19:33 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Chelsea seeing all of the ball early on, as you’d expect.

Leeds not as chaotic in their pressing as they were under Bielsa - certainly more control to how they defend these days.

19:30 , Matt Verri

We are underway at Elland Road!

19:26 , Matt Verri

Players are in the tunnel... Elland Road in fine voice!

Huge night coming up for the home side.

Not long now...

19:19 , Matt Verri

Ten minutes to go until kick-off!

Leeds needing a positive result in their relegation battle, Chelsea looking to find some form ahead of the FA Cup final... all to play for!

Should be a great match.

Perfect night for it!

Tuchel: It’s like a cup match for Leeds

19:07 , Matt Verri

Thomas Tuchel is expected a real test for his side tonight, against a Leeds side fighting for their Premier League survival.

“Leeds have stepped up in their physical input which is quite remarkable because we thought they already play on their top level physically under Marcelo Bielsa,” Tuchel said.

“They look very committed and in general this is a fast, hard-working team which is pretty talented individually and it is a match for them where it’s almost like a cup game.

“In our last match we took too much risk in our structure. We were not disciplined enough in our structure because the structure was already very offensive and very risky. So our game management needs to be better for this game.”

“We’ve got to do everything we can to get a result"

19:00 , Matt Verri

Lukaku eyeing up Wembley start

18:52 , Matt Verri

Thomas Tuchel had no words of advice for Erling Haaland ahead of his move to Manchester City. But the message to Romelu Lukaku was clear: Play your way into the FA Cup final.

Lukaku is set to start back-to-back games for the first time since February when Chelsea play Leeds tonight, with Tuchel admitting the striker’s two goals against Wolves over the weekend make him undroppable.

If the Belgium international can get on the scoresheet again at Elland Road, it would put enormous pressure on his manager to name him in the starting lineup for Saturday’s Wembley date with Liverpool.

That was unthinkable before the weekend, with Lukaku enduring a miserable return to Chelsea following his club-record £97.5million move from Inter Milan last summer.

Captain on return to team...

18:45 , Matt Verri

18:39 , Matt Verri

Lukaku does keep his place for Chelsea, with Mount and Pulisic starting alongside him. That means Werner and Havertz have to settle for places on the bench.

Jorginho returns in midfield but there is no Kante, while Christensen and Chalobah start over Azpilicueta and Silva.

For Leeds, they make four changes from the side that were beaten by Arsenal.

Cooper, Struijk, Bate and Rodrigo the players to come in to start. Plenty of pace and attacking talent in their forward line tonight.

Leeds team

18:34 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Meslier, Llorente, Cooper, Koch, Struijk, Bate, Phillips, Raphinha, Rodrigo, Harrison, James

Subs: Klaesson, Greenwood, Cresswell, Firpo, Klich, Hjelde, Gray, Shackleton, Gelhardt

Chelsea team

18:31 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Mendy; Christensen, Chalobah, Rudiger; James, Jorginho, Kovacic, Alonso; Mount, Lukaku, Pulisic.

Subs: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Silva, Sarr, Barkley, Loftus-Cheek, Ziyech, Havertz, Werner

Tuchel: Things are solved with Alonso

18:22 , Matt Verri

Thomas Tuchel insists he has cleared the air with Marcos Alonso after the Chelsea pair were involved in an exchange on Saturday.

The manager also denied claims the row had carried on into the dressing room at half-time, after Tuchel was visibly upset with Alonso during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Wolves.

The wing-back was then substituted for Saul Niguez at the break. But despite allegations of a further bust-up, Tuchel insists the issue was cleared up immediately.

The German said: “It started and ended in the first half. [It] was not continued at half-time. Nothing else. Things are solved. That happens.”

Warm welcome...

18:14 , Matt Verri

18:09 , Matt Verri

Team news coming up in 20 minutes.

Leeds with a whole host of players out - particularly short in defence after Ayling’s recent red card.

Plenty of decisions to make for Tuchel... does he go full strength or potentially have an eye on the FA Cup final? We’ll soon find out.

Leeds need the points...

18:01 , Matt Verri

Important night for Chelsea, but an even bigger one for Leeds.

Three games to go and they sit in the relegation zone, level on points with Burnley but with a much worse goal difference. Both sides are a point behind Everton in 16th, but the Toffees have a game in hand.

Burnley have Tottenham, Aston Villa and Newcastle still to play. Leeds will face Chelsea, Brighton and Brentford. Everton are up against Watford, Brentford, Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

Increasingly looks like a straight battle between Leeds and Burnley.

Stage is set

17:54 , Matt Verri

Big night for Chelsea...

17:48 , Matt Verri

With just two wins in their last seven Premier League matches, it’s so important Chelsea find a way to end their stumbling run.

Victory tonight would bring some much needed positivity back, and ensure they don’t really slip into a battle for a top-four place.

And of course there’s an FA Cup final to come this weekend - going into that off the back of another disappointing display is not what Thomas Tuchel will want.

Meeting the Boehlys

17:40 , Matt Verri

At first glance, Todd Boehly does not look like a billionaire. So, it is understandable that the American businessman, philanthropist and — as of this week — new owner of Chelsea FC went unnoticed by some of the fans he sat among in the lower west stand of Stamford Bridge three weeks ago.

On his visits to London over the past three months, the 46-year-old father-of-three has wandered around virtually anonymously, dressed in baggy hoodies, long-sleeved Henley T-shirts, chinos and jeans.

A baseball cap has kept his shaggy mop of hair under control and a dad-style anorak has kept out the British springtime chill.

The fluorescent laces worn on just one of his sneakers last Friday night when he signed terms on a £4.25 billion deal to buy Chelsea might have been the only reason for the average passer-by to look twice at the man whose star-studded portfolio ranges from the LA Dodgers baseball team, the LA Lakers basketball team and Bruce Springsteen’s song collection.

17:33 , Matt Verri

A win for Chelsea, usually so strong away from home, would put any lingering doubts about dropping out of the top four to bed. While Leeds are fighting for their lives, their lack of defensive options give Tuchel’s attackers a great chance of flourishing.

Chelsea to win, 2-0.

Chelsea team news

17:25 , Matt Verri

For Chelsea, Jorginho has been back in training after missing the Wolves draw while club-record signing Romelu Lukaku is expected to start again after his two goals in front of a watching Todd Boehly at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Ben Chilwell and Callum Hudson-Odoi are still sidelined, meanwhile.

“We are fighting for Jorgi and we’re fighting for N’Golo [Kante] for tomorrow, but it will be close and I don’t know if we make it,” Tuchel said on Tuesday.

Predicted Chelsea XI (3-4-3): Mendy; Christensen, Silva, Rudiger; James, Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic, Saul; Mount, Lukaku, Werner.

Leeds team news

17:17 , Matt Verri

Leeds head into the game in terrible shape. Already low on numbers after pretty much a season-long injury crisis, Luke Ayling’s ridiculous red card away at Arsenal rules him out for the rest of the campaign.

Patrick Bamford, Tyler Roberts, Adam Forshaw, Crysencio Summerville and Stuart Dallas are already out of action, though captain Liam Cooper should return after missing the games against Arsenal and Manchester City with a knee issue.
