A stoppage-time penalty from Brazilian winger Raphinha earned Leeds United a 1-0 home win over Crystal Palace, as they moved five points clear of the relegation zone.
The result left Palace 12th in the standings on 16 points from 14 games while Leeds moved two places up to 15th on 15 points after they ground out their third league win of the season.
Raphinha stroked his penalty past visiting goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, with the spot-kick given following a VAR check after centre back Marc Guehi handled a corner.
After a dull first half devoid of any chances, Leeds’ Rodrigo dragged a Daniel James cross from the left well wide of the near post in the 53rd, as he failed to turn and get a shot on target.
Christian Benteke then missed a pair of sitters for Palace, heading wide at the far post before home keeper Illan Meslier scrambled to smother the striker’s feeble close-range shot on the line.
Those misses proved costly for the visitors after the ball hit Guehi’s outstretched arm deep into stoppage time, with Raphinha making no mistake with the penalty to delight the home fans at Elland Road.

It looked certain to finish goalless for so long, but Guehi’s handball in stoppage time gave Leeds the chance to win it.
Raphinha made no mistake, and that’s a huge three points for Bielsa’s men.
22:10 , Matt Verri
90+5 mins: Challenges flying in now. Cresswell on for Leeds in the dying moments.
Forshaw shown a yellow card, and Palace have a last-second free-kick.
Phillips with the brilliant challenge to get it away.
GOAL! Leeds 1-0 Crystal Palace | Raphinha 90+3 mins
22:08 , Matt Verri
RAPHINHA HAS SURELY WON IT!
It’s cool to say the least! Raphinha strolls up, stutters, and Guaita stands still.
Raphinha hits it to the goalkeeper’s left just enough, and it’s into the back of the net.
22:06 , Matt Verri
STOPPAGE TIME PENALTY FOR LEEDS!
Raphinha whips in a corner, Cooper wins the header, and it’s been blocked almost immediately by the arm of Guehi.
Referee is over to look at the monitor and he gives it.
22:05 , Matt Verri
90 mins: Ball in from James, who is on the right now, and Ward heads it behind for a corner.
We’ll have five minutes of added time.
22:03 , Matt Verri
89 mins: Roberts with a curling effort from outside the box... that’s an easy save for Guaita.
Olise on for Palace, Ayew making way. He’s in no rush, it’s far to say.
22:02 , Matt Verri
87 mins: It looked like this match might be set up for a grandstand finish as both sides started to create chances, but last few minutes have been really stop-start.
21:59 , Matt Verri
85 mins: Raphinha out having a go on the left wing now. Rodrigo tracks back on the right, and he’s given away a free-kick in a dangerous position.
21:57 , Matt Verri
82 mins: Will Hughes is on for the visitors, replacing Schlupp.
Benteke drives towards the box, and he lets fly on the stretch from 20 yards out. Miles wild. He’s had an impact since he’s come on for sure, and really should have given Palace the lead.
21:54 , Matt Verri
80 mins: Ayew floats a ball into the box. Benteke gets a touch on it which completely wrong-foots Meslier, and he just about grabs hold of it right on the line.
James then roars past Ward, but Tomkins flies in to stop him, and it’s behind for a goal kick.
21:53 , Matt Verri
78 mins: Clever free kick from Leeds. Raphinha slides it in to Firpo, who plays it into the six-yard box but it’s well defended. Corner Leeds.
Towards Rodrigo at the near post, Tomkins heads it behind for another corner. Same routine, Rodrigo flicks it on, and it’ll be a third corner in quick succession. Palace get this one away.
21:50 , Matt Verri
76 mins: Wonderful ball in from Raphinha, but Forshaw can’t get there at the back post. Both sides are starting to show a bit more in attack now.
21:48 , Matt Verri
74 mins: WHAT A MISS! It’s a huge chance at last, and Benteke has made a complete mess of it.
Gallagher has a shot blocked, and it falls to Zaha. He dinks a lovely ball up to the back post... Benteke has a free header from six yards out, but he somehow heads it wide. So, so poor from the striker.
21:47 , Matt Verri
72 mins: Decent ball in from Gallagher, but Leeds are just about able to scramble it away.
About 20 minutes to go in this one... there has still been only one shot on target.
21:46 , Matt Verri
71 mins: James knocks it through the legs of Ward and think he’s away, but the Palace man gets his body in the way. Leeds want a free-kick, but they won’t get it.
Dallas then brings down Zaha just outside the box, and he too goes into the referee’s book.
21:44 , Matt Verri
69 mins: Forshaw lays it out wide to Firpo. He tires to combine with James, but it’s a loose pass and Palace hack it away.
21:40 , Matt Verri
66 mins: Zaha leads the Palace counter, and he knocks it past Dallas. The Leeds defender goes to ground, and tries to knock the ball away with his head as he falls over. He manages to put Zaha off and it runs out for a goal-kick. Dallas down holding his shoulder though.
Palace about to bring on Benteke for Edouard.
21:38 , Matt Verri
64 mins: Forshaw has clearly decided he’s going to shoot at every opportunity this half.
It comes from two big challenges from Dan James, which get the crowd up again. Robert lays it off to Forshaw, who has an effort from range but it’s well over the bar.
21:37 , Matt Verri
63 mins: Raphinha getting on the ball more and more, and he keeps looking for the switch across to James.
Forshaw is offside this time, which kills the attack. Guaita taking his time to take the free-kick, and the referee is over to tell him to get a move on.
21:35 , Matt Verri
60 mins: Firpo again causing real problems down the left wing. Dinks a ball to the back post, and it falls to Dallas. He catches it sweetly, but it’s blocked.
Back to Phillips on the edge of the area. Curls it, but again a Palace defender is in the way.
21:33 , Matt Verri
59 mins: Zaha takes on Raphinha, and in doing so stands on the Brazilian’s ankle and catches him high. Leeds man goes down, but he’s going to be ok.
21:31 , Matt Verri
57 mins: Hosts getting more and more joy, and it’s largely coming down the left-hand side. Firpo and James combine well, and it’s then fed inside to Forshaw. He shoots, but it’s blocked and bounces through to Guaita.
21:29 , Matt Verri
55 mins: Leeds starting to build pressure. Firpo gets to the byline, and his cut back deflects towards James. He swivels and shoots, but it’s blocked.
Firpo then very nearly plays in Zaha on the halfway line with a strange ball, but the Palace man can’t control it.
21:27 , Matt Verri
53 mins: BIG CHANCE.
Leeds break, with Zaha claiming a free-kick. Raphinha swings it across the pitch to James, who controls it perfectly. Squares it to Rodrigo... he takes a touch past the goalkeeper, but runs out of room and it goes out. Could have shot first time.. maybe should have.
21:25 , Matt Verri
51 mins: Kouyate down, and he’ll need treatment. Looks like he might have pulled his groin... not a huge amount of contact, but could well have twisted it awkwardly.
He’s going to try to continue.
21:23 , Matt Verri
48 mins: Gallagher takes... straight into the wall. Zaha on the volley from the rebound, and it’s scuffed over the bar.
21:21 , Matt Verri
47 mins: Welcome to the match.
Firpo brings down Ayew right on the edge of the box, and he goes into the book. Good work from Ayew, drove straight across the left-back and forced him to make the challenge.
21:20 , Matt Verri
We are back underway. Firpo on for Struijk, who picked up that knock at the end of the first half.
21:18 , Matt Verri
Players back out for the second 45 minutes. Let’s hope for more action!
21:12 , Matt Verri
Leeds have had five shots, Palace have had two... no shots on target between them.
Plenty of room for improvement for both sides in the second-half.
21:03 , Matt Verri
Leeds 0-0 Crystal Palace
Gallagher again, and as with pretty much all of the set-pieces for both sides this half, it comes to nothing.
That’s half-time. Leeds started well and there was a real intensity to the game, but that has faded as the half went on and there was very little in terms of clear-cut chances.
21:02 , Matt Verri
45+1 mins: Cooper tries to launch it up the pitch, but it’s charged down by Edouard, hits the Leeds man, and rolls out for a corner.
Very nearly finds Edouard at the far post, but just too much on it. Guehi keeps it alive, and wins another corner.
21:00 , Matt Verri
45 mins: The Leeds man is ok to continue, at least until half-time. Two minutes added on.
It’s not been the best of 45 minutes at Elland Road.
20:59 , Matt Verri
43 mins: Struijk down, receiving treatment on his left leg. Looks like he injured that as he fouled Ayew a couple of minutes ago.
20:57 , Matt Verri
42 mins: Yellow card getting quite the workout all of a sudden. Struijk brings down Ayew, and he too will go into the book. Bit of a hack, with both players already falling to the ground.
Gallagher to take, can he do better than Raphinha managed?
He can, but it’s still headed away.
20:55 , Matt Verri
39 mins: Another yellow card for Palace. Raphinha with a brilliant touch to bring down a ball over the top, and Gallagher slides in. Brings the Brazilian down, can have no complaints.
Really dangerous position this, Raphinha to whip it in from the right wing. Perfect angle.
Dreadful. Miles over everyone, out of play on the full.
20:53 , Matt Verri
37 mins: James is so quick to intercept as Palace try and play a quick free-kick. He robs Ward of the ball, and the full-back hauls the Leeds man down. Yellow card for Ward.
Raphinha sends the ball into the bar. Cleared. Raphinha in again. Cleared again.
20:51 , Matt Verri
35 mins: Zaha turns past Forshaw and drives into the box, but his ball in is cleared.
Dallas floats a ball over the top and James tries to bring it down, but it gets away from him and rolls through to Guaita.
20:48 , Matt Verri
33 mins: Roberts and Tomkins in a foot race as the ball is played over the top... the Palace man wins it.
Roberts goes down, Tomkins maybe catching him as he came in to clear. No foul though.
20:47 , Matt Verri
30 mins: Dan James drifting around the pitch, trying to get on the ball. He pokes it through to Struijk, who has moved the other way and Leeds lose it. Crowd getting slightly frustrated as their side struggle to build up any real momentum.
20:44 , Matt Verri
28 mins: Some good moments from both sides, but no really big chances. Phillips dinks a ball towards the back post where Raphinha is coming in, but Mitchell heads it back to his goalkeeper.
20:42 , Matt Verri
26 mins: Zaha picks up the ball and runs into the Leeds half. It’s him up against four defenders. Drifts past Cooper and goes down, and gets the free-kick.
He’ll be very happy with that, considering the lack of options up with him.
20:40 , Matt Verri
24 mins: Guaita gets the ball played back for him, and he doesn’t look delighted about it as Klich charges in to close him down, shutting down the passing options.
Wisely opts to launch it up the field.
20:38 , Matt Verri
22 mins: Good effort from Schlupp, but a comfortable enough save.
Leeds came flying out the blocks, but it’s been even for the last minutes or so - Palace may even have had the edge.
Phillips tries to put a stop to that though, intercepting really well before going for goal... off balance, well wide.
20:34 , Matt Verri
19 mins: Really poor from James. Great run inside Ward, and he’s away down the left.
Into the box, tries the cutback to Roberts, but it’s well behind his teammate and the opportunity goes.
It’s all forgiven... offside flag does up. Although replays show James was onside, so goal would have stood had Leeds made the most of the chance.
20:33 , Matt Verri
17 mins: Palace corner. Gallagher’s ball in is headed away by Forshaw at the near post. Raphinha breaks... doesn’t look up and see James, and loses it.
Ayew goes down appealing for a penalty, as Struijk challenges him. Not given.
20:30 , Matt Verri
14 mins: Schlupp cuts inside and knocks it past Cooper. Goes down... no foul given. Good decision, Schlupp fell down hoping for the contact, which never really came. Palace growing into the match though.
Forshaw has an effort from 20 yards out. Guaita unsighted, but it’s wide.
20:27 , Matt Verri
12 mins: Palace break well, but they don’t quite get it right. Ayew leads the counter, and plays it left to Zaha. Edouard is completely free on the right, but Zaha is falling back as he tries to play it across and doesn’t get the power.
Ayew gathers and has a shot, but it’s blocked. Edouard was the option for Zaha, just couldn’t get it to him.
20:25 , Matt Verri
10 mins: What a ball from Dallas, so dangerous. He keeps getting into space on the right wing. None of his teammates could get on the end of it though, and Ward hacks it away from under his own crossbar.
20:24 , Matt Verri
8 mins: Klich tries to get a shot away on the edge of the box, but it won’t drop and he has to turn back. Forshaw wide to Dallas, back inside... it bounces free, perfectly into the path of Raphinha and he’s never shy to let fly. Deflected over for a corner.
Llorente goes for the overhead kick. Full marks for ambition, unfortunately he doesn’t make any contact with it.
20:21 , Matt Verri
6 mins: Leeds are right up for it, flying into the challenges and harrying Palace. Phillips flies in to tackle Gallagher... firm but fair, and the Palace man acknowledges that.
Home crowd very much appreciating the start from their side.
20:19 , Matt Verri
4 mins: Dan James has an effort blocked, before Phillips loses the ball in midfield. Leeds pressing really high, as they always do. James charging in to close down Guaita at every opportunity.
20:18 , Matt Verri
2 mins: Leeds with the possession in the early stages at Elland Road.
Palace have their first attack though, and they should do much better. Schlupp picks it up just outside the box, and they have a man over. It’s Ayew... forced wide, and it goes out for a goal-kick.
20:15 , Matt Verri
We are underway. Big night for both sides... great atmosphere, and the Leeds players need to make full use of that this evening.
20:12 , Matt Verri
Players are out. Kick-off just minutes away now at Elland Road!

Marcelo Bielsa’s pre-match thoughts
20:00 , Matt Verri
The Leeds boss gets asked how important the next two home games are for Leeds, ahead of a really tricky run later in December.
“Very important. Very, very important.”
Well his players certainly know what their manager expects.
Warm-ups well underway

19:46 , Matt Verri
Leeds fans will be keeping an eye on the earlier kick-off this evening, between Newcastle and Norwich. They are two of the three sides below Marcelo Bielsa’s team in the table.
It’s not been a good start for Newcastle. They’ve had Ciaran Clark sent off inside ten minutes. They’re bottom of the table as it stands... they’ll need a huge effort to change that tonight.
19:36 , Matt Verri
Eze played 30 minutes off the bench against Villa over the weekend, as he continues his comeback after such a long time away for Palace.
He suffered an Achilles injury in May, and Saturday was his first appearance back for the team since then.
You’d imagine Vieira will be looking to get him involved again off the bench at some point in the second-half tonight.
19:28 , Matt Verri
It’s three changes for both sides then. For the visitors, Vieira brings in Jeffrey Schlupp, Odsonne Edouard and Jordan Ayew.
For Leeds, Pascal Struijk, Mateusz Klich and Tyler Roberts all come into the starting line-up. Phillips and Forshaw start in midfield tonight.
19:18 , Matt Verri
Starting XI: Guaita, Ward, Guehi, Tomkins, Mitchell, Kouyate, Schlupp, Gallagher, Ayew, Edouard, Zaha
Subs: Butland, Kelly, Clyne, Riedewald, Milivojevic, Hughes, Eze, Olise, Benteke
19:16 , Matt Verri
Starting XI: Meslier, Dallas, Llorente, Cooper, Struijk, Phillips, Forshaw, James, Klich, Raphinha, Roberts
Subs: Klaesson, Firpo, Cresswell, Harrison, Jenkins, Shackleton, Summerville, Rodrigo, Gelhardt

Team news to come in just over five minutes. Conditions look absolutely perfect at Elland Road, hopefully the action on the pitch proves to be just as good.

Zaha enjoying some pre-match reading
19:02 , Matt Verri
18:55 , Matt Verri
Palace will be hoping their display against Villa was a one-off and will no doubt be confident of being able to get the better of a Leeds side yet to find last season’s form. However, a midweek trip to Elland Road is hardly likely to present a walkover and a draw seems the most likely result.
Leeds 1-1 Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace team news
18:46 , Matt Verri
Palace are without defender Joachim Andersen and midfield James McArthur because of hamstring injuries. On Andersen, Vieira said in his press conference:
““He’s not going to travel with the team, he is still not 100 per cent,” Andersen said.
“We don’t know when he will be available. He have to evaluate the injury every day and see how he is feeling but for the game tomorrow it will be too short.”
Palace were boosted by the return of Ebere Eze as a substitute against Villa.
Leeds team news
18:31 , Matt Verri
Leeds remain without key men Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling because of injury, though the pair are closing in on a return to the side after featuring for the U23s yesterday.
Kalvin Phillips is expected to keep his place after being substituted at half-time against Brighton.
