Leicester City risk losing Caglar Soyuncu next week due to the transfer window remaining open in his native Turkey, where he has a specific suitor, according to reports.
The summer transfer window was not an enjoyable time for Leicester. They only made two signings, each for different reasons. Goalkeeper Alex Smithies came in on a free deal to provide competition for Danny Ward after the departure of Kasper Schmeichel.
Then, late in the summer, they signed Wout Faes as a result of their high-profile sale of defender Wesley Fofana.
There could be some pressure on Faes given the reputation Fofana built up. As a cheaper replacement, though, there won’t be as high expectations.
But Faes will have some responsibility in the coming weeks – which could become of increased significance if Leicester lose another member of their defensive department.
Although the English transfer window has now closed, like most of Europe, some markets remain open. Clubs can sell to buyers in those regions.
One place where the transfer window is still ongoing is Turkey, which has led to exit rumours for Leicester centre-back Soyuncu.
As relayed by Fabrizio Romano, Galatasaray are keen on taking the former Altinordu player back to his homeland.
Soyuncu has actually never played in the Turkish Super Lig. He was learning his trade in the second tier with Altinordu for two seasons before Freiburg spotted his potential and took him to Germany.
After two seasons in the Bundesliga, Soyuncu earned his Premier League chance with Leicester. After a patient start, he took to English football well. But now, after four seasons, he could be on the verge of an exit.
Back to Turkey for Caglar Soyuncu?
With just one year left on his contract, Leicester may contemplate selling Soyuncu to avoid losing him for free in 2023.
Indeed, they left him out of their matchday squad for their game against Brighton on Sunday, despite a lack of available alternatives. In his absence, they suffered a 5-2 defeat.
Their early season form has been poor. Although Brendan Rodgers believes Soyuncu has not been up to standard enough to get significantly involved.
Perhaps a new challenge could beckon for the 26-year-old if Leicester opt to cash in while they can. Other than Fofana and Schmeichel, they managed to keep hold of most of their key players over the summer, despite financial concerns.
Hence, if they need one more sacrifice, even for a small sum, they might have to think about selling Soyuncu.
Moving to Galatasaray would be something of a surprise for a player who has endured better spells in the Premier League. But his options are narrowing now, so it may make sense.
Galatasaray encountered their own difficulties last season, so do not have European football on offer. But they could provide a platform for Soyuncu to revive his career from.
The Turkish transfer window shuts on September 8.
