Ruud van Nistelrooy is the overwhelming favourite to replace Steve Cooper as the new boss of Leicester City - and the dragging of heels at another club who are potentially interested in the Dutchman has reportedly handed the Foxes an 'opportunity'.

Van Nistelrooy, well known for his playing days spent primarily at Manchester United and Real Madrid, has since moved into management and won the domestic Dutch cup while in charge of PSV Eindhoven in 2023, prior to joining Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. When Ten Hag was sacked earlier this season, Van Nistelrooy was granted an interim period in charge.

Since the appointment of Ruben Amorim, Van Nistelrooy has since taken his leave - having returned a set of positive results, including two victories over Cooper's Leicester - and is now on the look-out for a return to club management.

As of Tuesday afternoon, he is the overwhelming 1/4 favourite to take over at the King Power Stadium, a position in the market only strengthened by the fact that Graham Potter and David Moyes - both of whom are understood to be out of the running - are currently second and third favourites respectively. After that come Championship managers Carlos Corberan and Michael Carrick, both highly valued by West Brom and Middlesbrough and who would cost.

Bet365 spokesperson Steve Freeth said of the Leicester next manager market: "It’s been one-way traffic for Ruud over the last 12 hours or so with his odds tumbling from 7/1 into 1/4 with punters still keen to take the odds-on about the Dutchman being appointed."

Meanwhile, reports in Germany claim that Hamburg - on the look-out for a new manager, too - are interested in Van Nistelrooy but are currently in the middle of whittling down potential candidates. As such, Leicester are backed to strike while HSV - another club who Van Nistelrooy played for, and who are currently eighth in the second tier in Germany - undertake their own recruitment process.
