Leicester City new manager state of play with hunt wide open
Leicester City’s hunt for a new manager remains wide open despite the club's hope of making an appointment in the next few days.
City intend to waste no time in naming a successor to Steve Cooper and want a manager in place by the time they face Brentford on Saturday at 3pm. Preparations for the match begin on Tuesday with first-team coach Ben Dawson leading training, but City would like their new boss in the dugout at the Gtech Community Stadium.
But with four days to make an appointment, a leading contender has not yet emerged. There is long-term admiration of Graham Potter, and he is one of the bookmakers’ favourites alongside former West Ham boss David Moyes. However, right now, neither seem likely to become City’s new boss.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is also a reported contender, despite not being in the running in the summer. He has now had a taste of coaching in English football, having been on Erik ten Hag’s staff at Manchester United this summer before taking interim charge, during which he managed two big victories over City. Albeit, in both the 5-2 and 3-0 wins, the scorelines flattered United.
A big name in the football world, the former striker has also been linked to the vacant job at his old club Hamburg, who are eighth in the German second tier. As a senior manager, Van Nistelrooy has just one season to his name, at PSV Eindhoven in 2022/23, when he won the Dutch Cup and finished second in the Eredivisie to Arne Slot’s Feyenoord.
In the summer, West Brom boss Carlos Corberan was on City’s shortlist, with the Spaniard highly-rated among his coaching peers. A £4m compensation fee would need to be paid, and getting him out of the Hawthorns would be a more difficult process than bringing in an out-of-work manager, which would not help City’s hopes of a quick appointment.
Under Corberan, the Baggies sit sixth in the Championship table. They’ve been the division’s draw specialists of late meaning that they have won just one of their last 10, but they’re also unbeaten in eight.
One place ahead of West Brom are Middlesbrough and their manager Michael Carrick has been building a strong reputation for himself since leaving Manchester United’s coaching staff to take over at the Riverside. They finished in the play-offs in his first season in charge, and were four points outside the top six last term.
