Has Leicester City sacking thrown spanner in Coventry City's new manager search?

The appointment of Mark Robins’ successor continues to drag on this week with no immediate sign of an announcement by Coventry City.

According to several media outlets, Frank Lampard is the man the Sky Blues are closing in on, with some even going as far as claiming an agreement has been reached for the 46-year-old former Derby County, Chelsea and Everton boss to take over at the CBS Arena.

In terms of timing, it would be unlikely that a press conference would be called to announce any arrival at such short notice today (Mon) and we can pretty much rule out tomorrow (Tues, Nov 26), given that it’s a matchday with the team travelling up to Burnley.

That leaves Wednesday or Thursday as the most likely days for an unveiling, allowing the new man a couple of days to work with the players ahead of Saturday’s home game with Cardiff City, which would be an ideal stage for a fanfare arrival and opening fixture for the new man.

But one can’t help wondering whether the sacking up the road of Steve Cooper might just have thrown a spanner in Doug King’s works. If it’s a done deal with Lampard, then you’d think it’s a done deal.

However, if no-one has actually put pen to paper then it would not be beyond the realms of possibility that the former Swansea, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City boss would become a sudden and fresh managerial contender to come into the mix.

The 44-year-old was dismissed, somewhat prematurely some could argue, after just 12 games into a season when his remit was clear, to keep the Foxes in the Premier League. And with Leicester two places above the relegation zone, Cooper appeared to be fulfilling that brief thus far.

In terms of his coaching career, Cooper doesn’t have a bad CV. Having began at Wrexham’s academy while playing as a defender in the Welsh football leagues, he became one of the youngest coaches to achieve the qualification of UEFA Pro Licence at the age of just 27.

He moved to Liverpool in 2008 and was then appointed manager of their academy in 2011 before switching to join the England youth set-up in 2014, initially coaching the U16s before winning the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup with the U17s.

That paved the way to became head coach of Swansea City in 2019, who he took to the Championship play-offs, finishing sixth and fourth in consecutive seasons, only to lose to Brentford in the semi-finals in 2020 and miss out to the Bees again in the final in 2021.

He then moved to Nottingham Forest where he lifted them from bottom of the league in September 2021 to the play-off final later that season when they beat Huddersfield Town at Wembley to secure promotion to the Premier League.

He then kept Forest up on the club’s return to the top flight but a poor run of results in the Reds’ second season at the highest level resulted in him being sacked in December 2023. He was out of work for just a few months before being appointed as Enzo Maresca’s replacement after the Italian moved to Chelsea.

In terms of Doug King's demand for three play-off campaigns out of five, there are few better qualified and experienced than Cooper, who also ticks the owner's coaching boxes. Certainly makes you wonder!
