Leicester Tigers player ratings: Jasper Wiese ends superb season with starring performance
Following their 15-12 victory over Saracens in the Premiership final at Twickenham on Saturday, here’s the player ratings for Leicester Tigers.
15 Freddie Steward: A blanket which smothered Saracens’ kicking game, Steward was brilliant and reliable as ever. England’s 15 was also impeccable when in possession, setting up the first try and nailing a booming 50-22 in the second half. 8/10
14 Chris Ashton: Ashton provided instinctive support lines and carries when required, but he saw little of the ball. A near pin-point cross-field kick nearly found him for a try but Elliot Daly intercepted. 6
13 Matías Moroni: A quiet afternoon for Moroni in attack was made up for by a sterling defensive performance where he dealt with the powerful Saracens carriers. 7
12 Guy Porter: Porter’s lines left a lot to be desired but along with Moroni, he provided solid midfield defence to help the Tigers to victory. 6
11 Harry Potter: Although he received little action, Potter did well to find the ball when it was up for grabs with great vision. Smart play all-round from the Aussie wing. 7
10 George Ford: Ford’s rating no-doubt would have been higher should he have seen more minutes, but a slip near the touchline in the first half brought his day to an end prematurely. 6
9 Richard Wigglesworth: The ex-Sarrie surprised all by starting over Ben Youngs but there was no drop off between the two. Wigglesworth was a dynamo with exceptional work rate – creating a try through blocking an Owen Farrell kick. 8
8 Jasper Wiese: A true player of the match performance from the South African was brought about via crunching carries, brilliant defence and exemplary rucking. 9
7 Tommy Reffell: The soon-to-be Wales international was an utter menace at the breakdown. He worked tirelessly in defence too, helping to limit the impact of Saracens‘ plethora of carriers. 7
6 Hanro Liebenberg: The Tigers blindside did well to power over early in the game for a try when faced with the wall-like Saracens defence deep inside their 22. The 26-year-old South African proved his worth with grit and a disregard for his body throughout. 8
5 Calum Green: The older of Leicester’s second-row tandem showed great discipline and work rate in and around the ruck to help limit the turnovers that Mark McCall’s side are prone to winning. 6
4 Ollie Chessum: Chessum’s outing will have no doubt stood out to England boss Eddie Jones after showing off his immense skill level. Great speed and vision as a carrier. 7
3 Dan Cole: Powerful and wise, Cole engineered forward progress through the mauls and battled valiantly with Mako Vunipola when it came to scrum time. Helped Wiese over for his score. 7
2 Julián Montoya: Tenacious and ferocious performance from the Argentine hooker. Bulldozed through renowned Saracens pack on many an occasion with staggering effectiveness. 9
1 Ellis Genge (c): Workmanlike performance from the Tigers captain who scrummaged well against the experienced Vincent Koch. 7
Replacements: Cometh the hour, cometh Freddie Burns. Ford’s replacement immortalised himself as Leicester’s Jonny Wilkinson. 9
