Danny Lennon praised Hamilton after they gave his St Mirren side a tough match

St Mirren manager Danny Lennon paid tribute to his side's persistence after claiming a dramatic last-gasp winner over Hamilton in the Scottish Communities League Cup.

Tuesday night's third-round tie appeared destined for extra time, with neither side able to find the back of the net with more than 90 minutes on the clock.

Saints had carved out the best of the chances in the second half and their pressure eventually paid off when Lee Mair grabbed the decisive goal deep into injury time with almost the last kick of the ball.

Lennon was keen to pay tribute to Irn-Bru First Division strugglers Hamilton but was thrilled to see his side come out on top in the end in front of a sparse home crowd.

The Buddies boss said: "We're delighted. It was a very hard obstacle Hamilton put in front of us tonight. They had a very good organised set-up and great energy within their team.

"I certainly believe they are in a false position where they are. It was like chopping down a big old oak tree. We kept chopping and chopping and chopping and finally on the last swing it collapsed and we got the goal.

"I can't give Hamilton enough credit, with their energy in midfield. I thought Jon Routledge and Gary Fisher did well and showed good energy so they'll be gutted."

Accies - who sit second bottom of the First Division - may be out of the League Cup, but boss Billy Reid had nothing but praise for his players after pushing SPL Saints all the way.

He said: "I can't be negative on anything to be honest with you. We set out with a purpose of how we were going to play and I thought we were brilliant in the first half and were the better side."

Reid added: "We dealt with almost everything and then lost the goal with the last kick of the ball. But it's all plusses for us. I thought we had some great performers. It's a step in the right direction for us and I'm pretty upbeat."
