Lewis, who had led the field after the second and third rounds, looked to have been caught by Thompson, whose brilliant final round 65 saw her finish on 16-under-par 272.

Lewis bogeyed the 15th hole to end up tied for the lead, but she bounced back with a birdie on the next hole that was good enough for her to wrap up a one-shot victory.

France’s Karine Icher finished third, a short further back, while Azahara Munoz, Ryu So Yeon, Karrie Webb, Brittany Lincicome and Yoo Sun Young shared fourth place at -12.
