She is determined to tick a few things off her to-do list in 2022, but for Leylah Fernandez the ultimate goal is to continue “enjoying the sport”.

The Canadian is coming off an exceptional 2021 campaign as she won her maiden WTA Tour title in March, reached her first Grand Slam final as she finished runner-up to Emma Raducanu at the US Open and finished at a career-high of No 24.

The 19-year-old, though, did start last season with the hope of finishing in the WTA Rankings Top 10 and, even though that is still the goal for this campaign, she also wants to enjoy her tennis.

“I’ve always had those high objectives because my parents said if you don’t set the bar high, then you don’t really believe in yourself,” she told WTA Insider.

“This season is still the same. I want to achieve Top 10, I want be able to play the WTA Finals at the end of the year. Obviously, I want to win a Grand Slam.

“But I define success as me enjoying the sport, enjoying my time on the tennis court. As a team, we don’t want to lose that happiness working together.

“We want to keep that smile, keep that joy for the sport and then finish the year healthy, physically, mentally and also emotionally. That’s success for me.”

Fernandez started her season with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova from Russia at the Adelaide International.
