There is a famous saying that you should never take your work home with you but try telling that to new Leyton Orient head coach Steve Davis, who lives inside the stadium.

Davis has been handed the huge task of helping the club gain promotion back into the Football League following their relegation last season.

The 52-year-old is so determined to stay close to the action that he has moved into one of the flats overlooking the ground that has endured such a torrid recent history. The club almost went out of business following a nightmare period under former Italian owner Francesco Becchetti, and faced a winding-up petition in March.

But US-based businessman and life-long fan Nigel Travis, who is the CEO of Dunkin’ Donuts, led a consortium to save the club and Orient have now restored some stability.

Fans have probably lost count of the number of managers over the past three years — 11 including the caretakers placed in charge — and Travis has placed his faith in Davis, who steered Crewe into League One.

Davis has no doubts about the challenge and said: “It is a bit hard for me to get away from my work and it is like sleeping in the office at times. I have never done it before — well, only when I have fallen out with the missus!

“Barry Hearn (former owner) has some of the flats and when the opportunity came up I couldn’t turn it down. You live, eat, sleep and breathe it whilst you are here.

“I have got one of the biggest gardens in east London but it does mean that I can keep an eye on what the groundsman is doing.”

Davis is keeping an eye on the table, too, after a dreadful run which has seen his side lose four of their past five games. They were second in the National League but are now 15th after three consecutive home defeats and Davis knows the importance of getting something from a tricky game at Tranmere on Thursday night. The club have not been helped by injuries to key defenders Josh Coulson and George Elokobi but Davis insists his team can challenge in the top half.

The next few days could play a crucial role in Orient’s season, as Davis is planning a team-bonding session.

They will stay in the North-West after the game and spend the end of the week together before their next away game at Barrow on Saturday. Davis will have to get used to a different view over the next few days but if results go Orient’s way, he won’t mind one bit.
