Leyton shooting: Two arrested on suspicion of murder after man killed at snooker club

Two men have arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was shot dead at a snooker club in east London.

Firearms officers were called to the Phoenix snooker club in Leyton shortly before 3am on Sunday following reports of gunshots.

A man in his 20s was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police have arrested two men in their 20s on suspicion of murder and they remain in custody.

Both suspects suffered non-life threatening injuries during the incident and were treated at an east London hospital.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Wrigley said: "We understand the victim and two other men went to the snooker club.

"The victim was then involved in an altercation with another group and a number of shots were fired. A young man has lost his life and two others are injured."

The victim has not been formally identified but his next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem is due to take place.

DCI Wrigley appealed for anyone who was at the snooker club or in the area at the time of the shooting to contact police.

It was the second fatal shooting in the capital over the weekend after a man in his 30s was killed in Wembley on Friday night.

A murder investigation was also launched in Wembley on Sunday evening after a man was found with serious head injuries at Brent River Park and died at the scene.

And police are investigating the murder of a woman whose body was found in Blackheath, southeast London, on Friday evening.

Chief Superintendent Richard Tucker said he wanted to reassure Londoners "who are concerned and alarmed following recent tragic incidents".

"The Metropolitan Police is working with our partners to do all we can to prevent such tragic attacks and are determined day and night to apprehend those involved and take weapons off the streets," he said.

"The shootings in Wembley and Leyton are not being treated as linked.

"Our local policing teams are working with the violent crime taskforce and other specialist resources, as well as with our local partners to help keep London safe."

CS Tucker said there would be an "enhanced policing presence" in areas near crime scenes in the coming days.

"Officers will be on hand to listen to any concerns they have and continue to appeal for those with information to come forward," he added.
