With pulsating LED lights and 20W amplification, LG’s PN5 XBoom Go is a little Bluetooth speaker that makes a big noise, and it’s currently available from Currys for £79.99 (down from £129), that represents a £49 saving.
The XBoom models are the party animals in LG’s wireless speaker range. They're designed to be the centre of attention (hence the illuminated drivers) and rugged enough to cart around the park or pitch up at a BBQ — the soft-touch matte finish carry-handle doubling as a handy speaker stand. The PN5 is the most versatile of the lot.
For one thing, it isn’t short on stamina. It’ll run for 18 hours on a full battery, which should see you through more than a few Halloween playlists, the lighting effect syncing to the beat of the music.
The XBoom is also IPX5 certified, which means it’ll survive the odd splash around the pool, or more likely, unexpected autumn downpours.
But there’s more to this XBoom than meets the eye. It’s part of an ongoing collaboration between LG and Meridian Audio, one of the UK’s most lauded high-end audio companies. A thoroughbred Meridian speaker, designed for audiophiles, will set you back thousands.
This transportable obviously isn’t in the same ballpark, but it's definitely reassuring to know that some of Britain’s golden-eared hi-fi boffins have had some say in its performance. Meridian is famed for the excellence of its DSP (Digital Sound Processing), and knows a thing or two about component choice.
One reason why the PN5 sounds larger than it looks is the integration of dual passive radiators (at each end of the speaker), which help move air, plus proprietary Bass Boost technology. There’s also DTS Stereo processing, which makes the audio sound wider. If you need to fill a room, this XBoom lives up to its name.
There’s also Multi-Bluetooth support, so you can share playlists. The speaker will automatically go into Speaker Phone mode with any incoming calls.
Intriguingly, you can also partner the PN5 with an LG 2020/2021 TV, for bigger TV audio.
And just for fun, this PN5 will link up to other PN5 XBoom Party Link speakers — as many as 100. Now that would be quite the party!
