Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson enjoyed his wild ride at Bathurst when he got behind the wheel of the RB7.

As the 2023 staging of the Bathurst 12 Hour played out at Mount Panorama, there was time in the schedule for Lawson to take the RB7 for a spin.

At the hands of Sebastian Vettel, the RB7 became a title-winning Formula 1 car back in 2011, but it was sporting less downforce for Lawson’s demo run at Mount Panorama.

That being said, Lawson had expected to be in for a rougher ride.

“Just crazy,” said Lawson in reflection with Speedcafe.com. “Just really crazy.

“The first lap was honestly very daunting going up the hill with all the elevation, and I was quite nervous.

“But by the second lap I actually got quite comfortable and the car was really good, so I loved it.

“At points it was a bit rough, but for a Formula 1 car on this place, I expected it to be worse, just felt cool, just felt really cool.

“Down Conrod, we were completely flat and was through The Chase, braking at like, I don’t know, 120 metres. It was so, so cool.

“It wanders a lot, I was like ‘Oh my God’ trying to keep it in a straight line, but once you get used to it, it’s okay.”

Liam Lawson out to secure a place in Formula 1

Serving as Red Bull’s reserve driver, Lawson will be hoping that in the near future, his Formula 1 activities will stretch beyond free practice outings and Red Bull demo runs.

After finishing third in the 2022 Formula 2 Championship, the 20-year-old New Zealander will make his debut in Japan’s Super Formula in 2023, racing with Team Mugen.

Alongside that drive, he will also remain a reserve and test driver for Red Bull and their sister team AlphaTauri.

The Red Bull Junior Team has hit a bit of a baron spell in recent times, so it goes without saying that Lawson would love to be the driver who makes that breakthrough, especially with potential 2024 opportunities at AlphaTauri.

Yuki Tsunoda needs a strong 2023 to prove that he deserves his place in Formula 1, while it remains to be seen how Nyck de Vries will get on in his first full F1 season.
