Historically Black Colleges and Universities are some of the most culturally rich and tradition-heavy institutions in the country. To honor these illustrious schools, New York City-based lifestyle brand, Alife partnered with retail store Urban Outfitters and clothing brand Champion for a special collection that coincides with Black History Month.
The trio of brands collaborated on an HBCU capsule collection highlighting historic Black colleges. Produced by collegiate licensing company CLC, the line highlights over 20 HBCUs, including Morehouse College, Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, Howard University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University and more.
Treis Hill, Alife co-founder and Hampton University alum, spoke highly of the collab in an official statement.
“I am thrilled that this collection, which celebrates all of the culture, community and connectivity which an HBCU experience brings, is being showcased by Urban Outfitters and Champion,” he said.
Hill also told Blavity that Alife could not successfully contact each institution individually but assures that the intentions behind the collection were to be authentic and inclusive of HBCU alumni.
The campaign, inspired by HBCU homecomings, also fully stars HBCU alumni. An HBCU alum also shot the campaign.
In addition to this collection, Urban Outfitters is launching “UO Summer Class ’21” in the Spring of 2021. Through this initiative, one student from each of the five participating HBCUs will be nominated based on their academic excellence. The finalists will be invited to participate in a 10-week paid internship program where they will receive a one-on-one mentorship.
“A lot of these HBCU graduates have helped shape the culture of what America is today,” Hill said.
