Roberto Soldado opened the scoring for Valencia on 20 minutes, thumping in a stunning volley from a ball by Adil Rami.
Nelson Valdez consolidated Valencia’s lead with a second goal on a left-footed shot for in the 95th minute.
Xotos were forced to play the rest of the match with 10 men when Ricardo Costa was shown a red card in the 90th minute. Despite the loss in man power, the hosts coped well for the remainder of the match and pulled off an impressive win. Los Che attempted five shots, including two on target.
Atletico controlled possession for about half of the contest thanks to strong open field play, winning 56 duels and 19 headers, which led to eight shots, including two on target.
Cristian Rodríguez made his mark on the match after coming on for Emre Belozoglu in the 57th minute, as he took two shots. Radamel Falcao had three shots, more than any of his team-mates.
While Atletico ended up winning the possession battle over the duration of the match, Valencia reached half-time with 58.8 per cent control of the ball.
Valencia now sit in seventh in the table with a record of four wins, four losses and two draws. Atletico are three points behind leaders Barcelona in second place with a record of eight wins, one loss and one draw.
