Liga - Casillas: Bale one of Europe's best

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas has described Gareth Bale as “one of the three or four best in Europe” as the Spanish club ready another world record bid for the Tottenham Hotspur star.

It is believed Tottenham turned down a huge offer for Bale at the weekend – reported to be as much as £82 million – as they aim to prevent the Wales international from moving to the Bernabeu.

However, Madrid are reported to be preparing a new approach in an effort to secure a player who was named PFA Player of the Year, PFA Young Player of the Year and Footballer of the Year in England last season.

Casillas, speaking during Madrid’s pre-season tour in Los Angeles, was full of praise for Bale when asked about his club’s interest in the winger/forward.

“We are talking about a player who is one of the three or four best in Europe and it is normal to talk about him because he has very good conditions for the game,” Casillas told reporters.

Madrid-based daily Marca reported on Tuesday that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is demanding 145 million euros (£126m) for Bale – a figure that would smash the current transfer record of £80m paid by Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

“The valuation? All operations are controversial for better or worse, but we are talking about a decisive player and he is very good,” Casillas added.

“Until the transfer window is closed there is the chance of someone arriving.”
