The club first revealed plans in December 2011 for construction of the 70,000 all-seater stadium, to be named La Peineta and replace the club’s home since 1966, the Vicente Calderon.

Whilst it was launched in tandem with Madrid’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games, that the Spanish capital have been unsuccessful has not stopped Atleti pushing on with their project.

On from asserting as much in the wake of the 2020 Games being awarded to Tokyo at the weekend, Atleti CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has today offered reporters a further detail on plans ahead.

“We intend to complete work during the season of 2015-16 and to then move into the stadium in 2016-17,” Gil Marin has revealed during a visit to the stadium’s site, also attended by President Enrique Cerezo and Antonio Cruz, one of the architects working on the project.
