Messi scored twice as Barca dispatched Elche with teenager Munir getting the game’s other goal on his first senior appearance.
Rakitic praised his new teammate, particularly after seeing him up close, and gave his thoughts on his place in the squad amid competition for midfield places.
“It’s needless to repeat, he’s the best in the world,” AS reports Rakitic as saying.
“He might be the best ever. I enjoy training with him. He makes everything easier.
“I’m calm, what I want is to train and play football, no one has given me anything and I don’t think anyone is going to do that in football.
“I will work hard, do my best and prepare well. The rest will follow.
“We are talking about the best in their positions. If you have the desire that we have to work well, everything is easier.”
Rakitic also offered his impressions of coach Luis Enrique and spoke of what he believes will make the ex-Celta Vigo technician a success.
“I’ve told you he works on the details,” the Croatia international added.
“We’ll get it all. We have some room for improvement but winning the first game is important and to do well in front of the fans too.”
