Raul celebrates scoring for Real Madrid against Al-Sadd

The former Real star, who now turns out for the Qatari side, wore his old number seven shirt, as Cristiano Ronaldo deferred to the legend and sported the 11.

Raul is Madrid’s record goalscorer and he showed his finishing touch early on, clipping Angel Di Maria’s delivery into the back of the net with a deft left-footed finish.

At half-time he changed into Al-Sadd’s kit, with Ronaldo returning to his favoured number seven shirt, as Real ran away with the match thanks to goals from Isco, Karim Benzema and Jese Rodriguez, who scored a late double.

Another notable appearance was that of Real skipper Iker Casillas, who was out of favour under Jose Mourinho last season and again found himself on the bench for the season opener against Real Betis at the weekend.

Casillas, who has been linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and even Barcelona, started the match but was replaced by Diego Lopez at half time.

"It was wonderful, I want to thank the fans that came and showed me their affection," Raul said afterwards.

"I looked up at the scoreboard hoping that the minutes would not tick by. I think everyone enjoyed it - my team made a good showing of themselves and were close to scoring.

"Everyone has come away happy. I could not have had a better tribute, with the ground full and playing again in a Real Madrid shirt.

"There were a lot of small details in this match. Cristiano giving me his shirt, Casillas his armband…everyone has made me feel welcome. Thanks to the club, to the coaching staff that have made me feel like one of them."
