The Spain international had been linked with a move back to Vicente Calderon following a disappointing spell at the west London club.

But the 29-year-old, who left the Rojiblancos for Liverpool in 2007, has called the rumours 'unrealistic'.

“I have never hidden the fact that I am very grateful for everything Atletico gave me,” he told AS.

“But the reality is that I'm at another team and I have three years left on my contract.

“There are still many things for me to achieve at Chelsea before I return home.

“Right now returning to Atletico is not realistic.”

The goalscorer then commented on his future in the Spanish National Team.

“My objective is to play well for Chelsea so I can get back into the Spain team. There are still many games to go and we are going for two trophies.

“If everything goes well the doors of the national team could open for me again. I still want to play for Spain as much as I did when I first started out, I don't want to think that I've played my final game for Spain.

“I think that I've still got a lot of games left to play for Spain. I'm still hoping I will be able to be with my Spain team-mates again, play in the Confederations Cup this summer and the following year in the World Cup.”
