David Villa scored a double as Atletico Madrid secured a 2-0 win over Celta Vigo.
The former Barcelona striker bagged the brace in the second half, as Diego Simeone’s side won their first away game in three attempts and made the most of Barca’s earlier slip up against Valladolid.
Celta Vigo dominated possession before the break, with Charles Dias coming closest for the home side. However, Thibaut Courtois did well to thwart the striker on a couple of occasions.
Villa found the net just after the hour mark, pouncing on a loose backpass by Jonny to fire past Yoel in the Celta Vigo goal.
And just seconds later Villa doubled his side’s lead, taking up a withdrawn position just inside the box to find the bottom corner with an assured finish.
24’ AUDACIOUS – Oh wow! Raul Garcia spots Yoel off his line and volleys towards goal from wide on the right side. He was about 40 yards out but fortunately for the Celta keeper the ball bounces over the bar. Ooft!
31’ PENALTY – Huge claims for a penalty kick from the Celta players and home crowd! Mallo strikes a shot from the edge of the box which hits Alderweireld. Replays show he couldn't get his arm out of the way and the referee made the right call.
62’ GOAL – Villa pounces on a slack backpass by Jonny, firing past Yoel in the opposition goal.
63’ GOAL – Wow! Atletico score their second in as many minutes, with Villa finding the bottom corner from about eight yards out.
David Villa has scored the first goal of the game more often than any other player in La Liga this term.
TALKING POINT – Are Atletico’s away woes behind them?
Atletico Madrid came into this game having lost their last two away games. However, Simeone’s team look assured for the majority of the match, controlling the contest in a way they haven’t done for a few weeks. Are their away woes behind them?
