In front of 44,000 fans France striker Karim Benzema scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half.

It was beautifully made for him by Mesut Ozil on the right wing, who picked out a pinpoint pass for the predatory striker to finish past Salvatore Sirigu and into the corner.

Madrid had threatened early on, with Cristiano Ronaldo looking especially dangerous, while Ezequiel Lavezzi missed a great chance for the French champions.

After the goal PSG went looking for an immediate equaliser, with Blaise Matuidi, captain for the day Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Javier Pastore all going close with Diego Lopez in inspired form in the Spanish side’s goal.

Lavezzi missed another golden chance from close range from an Ibrahimovic nod down while Benzema was wasteful when Real finally created another opportunity.

In the second half Sirigu kept out three Ronaldo efforts in quick succession and he also denied the Portuguese from a last-minute free-kick.

Laurent Blanc will be pleased with his side ahead of next weekend’s Trophee des Champions against former club Bordeaux.

Milan conquered Valencia 2-1 at the Mestalla and will therefore face Inter or Chelsea in the Guinness International Champions Cup.

This was the opening match of the tournament and, unlike the rest of it to be played in the United States, was at the Mestalla in Valencia.

Other teams in the competition are Real Madrid, Juventus, Inter, Chelsea, Everton and LA Galaxy. Milan will face the winners of Chelsea-Inter on August 4 in New York.

Vicente Guaita brought down Andrea Poli early on and Robinho stepped up for the penalty, but hit a weak effort straight into the arms of the goalkeeper - just days after ballooning another spot-kick over the bar against Sassuolo.

Robinho made up for the error moments later, springing the offside trap from an Andrea Poli through ball to place the angled drive into the far bottom corner.

The Brazilian’s evening took another twist when he picked up an injury and had to make way for Urby Emanuelson.

Nigel De Jong confirmed his Achilles tendon injury is behind him with a fantastic goal, thumping a right-foot screamer into the top corner from outside the box.

The Dutchman almost added a second with his free kick just wide of the upright, but Valencia got one back with a very well-worked goal. A chipped Jonas pass over the top was rolled across by Alcacer for Dani Parejo to sidefoot home from close range.

Milan were fortunate to hang on to the lead when Federico Cartabia’s rocket rattled the crossbar in the final minutes.

Radamel Falcao scored from close range as a star-studded Monaco side beat Leicester City 3-0 at the King Power Stadium.

Colombia hit-man Falcao, one of the world’s most feared strikers, had endured a difficult afternoon as Foxes defender Wes Morgan marked him tightly.

Monaco had already taken the lead through Layvin Kurzawa's early header, before Falcao - who joined Monaco from Atletico Madrid for £52.8m this summer - side-footed past Kasper Schmeichel after Andrea Raggi’s cross was dummied by Yannick Carrasco.

Marcel Tisserand added a late third for the Principality side, whose starting XI boasted the likes of Eric Abidal, Ricardo Carvalho, Joao Moutinho and Jeremy Toulalan.

Gerardo Martino earned his first win as Barcelona boss as the Blaugrana put seven past Valerenga in Oslo.

After the loss to Bayern Munich, Barca responded in style with Alexis Sanchez, Cristian Tello and Lionel Messi all on the scoresheet in the opening quarter of an hour.

Jonathan Dos Santos made it four before the break, Jean Marie Dongou hit a brace and Joan Roman put the seal on the win late on.

Mauro Icardi was on target as Inter earned a 1-1 friendly draw away to Hamburg.

Icardi broke the deadlock after just 73 seconds when he surprised Drobny to get on the end of a splendid Fredy Guarin cross from the right.

The hosts drew level straight after the restart, Rudnevs scoring from Arslan’s cross.

Atalanta earned a shock 5-2 victory over 10-man Udinese in the Trofeo Bortolotti, as Marko Livaja bagged a brace.

Luca Cigarini broke the deadlock early on when turning in a German Denis backheel flick, though Thomas Heurtaux equalised after combining well with Dusan Basta.

Giacomo Bonaventura was brought down by Gabriel Silva for a Denis penalty. After the spot-kick a brawl broke out in the box and Udinese goalkeeper Ivan Kelava saw red for his part in the incident.

Against 10 men for the entire second half, Atalanta ran riot in front of enthusiastic home fans. Inter-owned Livaja beat debutant shot-stopper Francesco Benussi with a fierce strike, then made the most of a Danilo error to complete his brace.

Maurizio Domizzi nodded in an Andrea Lazzari cross, but Baselli’s free kick sealed the 5-2 victory for Atalanta.

Marvin Emnes bagged a brace as Middlesbrough beat Bordeaux 2-1 in their final pre-season game.

Lukas Jutkiewicz slipped the ball through for his strike partner who clipped in a neat finish from six yards after 20 minutes.

Visiting keeper Cedric Carrasso spilled an effort shortly after the restart and Emnes poked in the rebound before Henri Saivet pulled one back for the French side.

Steve Morison's penalty secured a 1-0 friendly win for Millwall against La Liga side Rayo Vallecano.

The striker netted in the 57th minute after a Rayo defender handled in the area.

Leeds ended their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 defeat to FC Nurnberg at Elland Road.

Daniel Ginczek netted in both halves condemning the Whites to a second defeat in three outings since their return from a tour of Slovenia.

Anthony Stokes was on target for Celtic in a pre-season friendly at Parkhead but could not prevent them slumping to a 2-1 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Irishman came off the bench to pull a goal back but the German visitors were too strong in this outing.

Monchengladbach had the best of the possession and the best chances in the first half and so it was no real surprise to see them take the lead eight minutes before the break when Granit Xhaka lashed home from 20 yards.

The Germans extended their lead after 66 minutes when Branimir Hrgota netted after just three minutes on the field.

Stokes managed to pull a goal back for the Hoops after 74 minutes when he sent a lovely free-kick into the net.

Fiorentina continued to impress with a 7-0 thrashing of Apollon Limassol, as Mario Gomez was on target and Giuseppe Rossi scored twice.

It took former Bayern Munich striker Gomez less than a minute to break the deadlock with a solo effort.

Gomez was about to score a second, but it was only parried into the path of Manuel Pasqual for the 2-0.

Goalkeeper Neto seemed a little uncertain on crosses, but Fiorentina made it 4-0 after the break with two Matos goals in quick succession.

Facundo Roncaglia was given the captain’s armband in the second half and also found his way on to the scoresheet.

Papoulis had the first and practically only shot on target for Apollon Limassol on 59 minutes.

Giuseppe Rossi took control with a sensational strike, as he trapped a pass between two defenders and squeezed his left-foot shot into the top corner.

Rossi completed his brace soon after on Vecino’s assist.
