The French champions were keen to sign the Argentina international but problems with Financial Fair Play meant it was difficult to push through a deal.

"We talked with (Real Madrid) president (Florentino) Perez but Di Maria was too expansive so we stopped the discussion," PSG president Nasser al Khelaifi told a news conference at the club's unveiling of David Luiz.

Di Maria has also been linked with Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Monaco but it appears he will stay with Real Madrid for now.

He only returned to training with Real this week after being given more time off by Madrid after Argentina reached the World Cup final.

Earlier reports had suggested that Madrid and PSG agreed a €75m transfer fee which would have come close to offsetting the €81m that Real Madrid signed to bring in James Rodriguez from Monaco.

Could PSG's loss be Manchester United's gain? Louis van Gaal has more pressing needs than attacking wide men but world class players do not grow on trees and if United have the type of bottomless funds that has been suggested, then they could certainly do worse than opening a dialogue with Di Maria and his people.

Real have also long lusted after Monaco striker Radamel Falcao, so a potential blockbuster swap deal should not be ruled out either.

Of course Di Maria could always stay at Real Madrid, which would please manager Carlo Ancelotti, but how he would manage to fit in all the attacking talent at Real would present a whole new challenge for the Italian.

However, we are still not willing to call a potential move to PSG completely dead. This could all be a power play from PSG to try and get Real to relax their demands and you know what? It might just work.
