The hosts began well enough with Romain Hamouma capitalising on a mistake from Toulouse goalkeeper Ali Ahamada to put Les Verts ahead in the 18th minute.

With Toulouse struggling near the bottom of the table, the writing seemed to be on the wall, but Saint Etienne failed to take advantage of their early lead and squandered a number of chances.

They paid the price for their profligacy when Toulouse struck twice in 12 second-half minutes to snatch an unlikely victory.

Danish striker Martin Braithwaite levelled things up on 63 minutes before Issiaga Sylla struck what proved to be the winner with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Victory for Toulouse - their first of the season - sees them climb to 16th on six points, while Saint Etienne remain in second, a point off leaders Monaco who meet fellow big guns Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.
