Lindsey Vonn said she needed a miracle to conjure up a golden finale to her Olympic ambitions but it wasn’t to be.

The American was comfortably in first place after the downhill section of the combined today but, after only three slalom runs this season, she lacked fluency, caught a ski tip and did not finish.

She said: “The miracle didn’t happen but I gave it my best effort. Slalom is tough for me. I fought really hard but straddling [a gate] is something I do often, which is why I don’t ski the event anymore.

“But I’m proud of my downhill run. I thought it was awesome. I won the last downhill run I did at the Olympics and that’s cool.”

Team-mate Mikaela Shiffrin added a silver to her giant slalom gold as Michelle Gisin won the title and fellow Swiss skier Wendy Holdener took third.
