Line of Duty star Martin Compston has addressed why it has taken so long for the show to return.

Last airing in the spring of 2021, producer Jed Mercurio and the all-star cast have expressed their hopes of continuing the story of AC-12, but the BBC has yet to hand out a renewal for the show.

In a new interview with The Sun, Compston — who plays Steve Arnott — has explained that Line of Duty has been put on the back burner simply because its cast and writer are so busy.

"We’d all love to work together again but we’re all doing different stuff," he said. "We’re all running around. It’s just timing, and to get to the same point.”

The actor went on: "It’s testament to what we created that everybody is still desperate for more. I love that people ask about it. The day people stop, it’ll be a sad day."

And he's correct — Compston is busy training the celebrity-filled World football squad for their upcoming showdown with Team England for Soccer Aid at Old Trafford this weekend.

The actor is also set to film the next series of Prime Video's The Rig this summer, where he plays one of the unlucky lot trapped on an oil rig surrounded by infectious spores.

His co-star Vicky McClure confirmed this week that she had wrapped filming on the second series of Trigger Point — which is produced by Line of Duty's Daniel Brierley.

Their colleague Anna Maxwell Martin has lined up a new project of her own as well, as she will lead ITV1's true crime drama Delia Balmer. In it, she will play the title character — a woman who survived an abusive relationship with notorious serial killer John Sweeney.

Line of Duty is streaming on BBC iPlayer, and DVD and Blu-ray boxsets are also available to buy now.
