Torquay boss Martin Ling has offered a candid explanation of his decision to place Lloyd Macklin on the transfer list.

The 22-year-old has found himself on the fringes of the Gulls squad for the last two seasons, frustrating Ling to the point of declaring the winger has no future at Plainmoor.

Ling told the club's official website: "Lloyd has been placed on the transfer list. He's had five years in the game and nobody has really got the best out of him in that time."

He added: "He was one of the youngest-ever players to make his debut for Swindon when he was 16 and I still feel we have a 16-year-old on our hands. He hasn't been consistent enough. He produces it now and then but he needs to learn the way of being a footballer.

"It is something he hasn't really grasped and I'm not prepared to try any more, and that's why he has been listed. But I've never ostracised someone in my life and he will be given the chance to do pre-season training with us.

"It is right for this football club to transfer list him. He needs to find pastures new and use that undoubted talent better. To be a sub that only touches the pitch a couple of times is not enough for someone at the age of 22."
