The meme world is often described as lazy and arcane, inhabited by dazed armchair jockeys with little inclination to do and say much - in other words, it would take an instance of absolute splendour to inspire them to work.
Well, that instance occurred late on Sunday evening in an epic El Clasico clash between perennial heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona, when world superstar Lionel Messi fired the Catalans to an improbable win over the La Liga leaders with the last kick of the match.
Faced with a hostile Bernabeu crowd, the Argentine - not one to shy away from the cat calls and booing - made his way towards the cesspit of noise, duly removed his shirt and held it aloft, much to the great disgruntlement of the Los Blancos faithful.
The goal happened to be the diminutive magician's 500th in a Barcelona shirt, which moved the club back to the summit of the La Liga table, rejuvenating in the process their bid for the title.
It was also a moment to behold, an instance of inspiration as the memists took to their keyboards in tandem and ushered in a wealth of hilarious images:

WTF: Everybody was so busy celebrating Lionel Messi's goal...they didn't realise he was perfectly holding his shirt with one-hand. pic.twitter.com/aiUEzn4P1g
