Salah shines (again)

Mohamed Salah was pitted against his former employers in the Champions League semi-final. Both Salah and AS Roma are chasing their own slice of history. The Egypt international had the chance to become Liverpool’s record goal-scorer in a single European campaign. AS Roma were looking to take a big step towards their first Champions League final.

Salah has caught out many Premier League defences this season but AS Roma know all about the African’s qualities after his two seasons in the Italian capital. However, the 25-year-old scored two goals and made two assists to rip apart the Serie A side. It was a mesmerising performance.

Henderson leads by example

Jordan Henderson returned to the Liverpool side after missing the second leg at Manchester City due to suspension. The England international was tasked with marshalling the Reds against a robust AS Roma midfield of Daniele De Rossi, Radja Nainggolan and Kevin Strootman.

While Henderson isn’t a glamour name, the 27-year-old produced a talismanic performance worthy of the Champions League semi-final. He made three crucial tackles and maintained Liverpool FC’s momentum going forward. Henderson showed great tactical awareness to protect against the potential threat AS Roma could pose on the break.

Sloppy mistakes

Upon reflection, Liverpool should be thrilled with a 5-2 win against AS Roma. However, late goals from Edin Dzeko and Diego Perotti took the polish off an otherwise perfect night for the Reds. The former Manchester City striker scored what looked like being a consolation goal after Dejan Lovren switched off and was punished.

James Milner’s handball allowed Perotti to give AS Roma a lifeline from the spot. Liverpool escaped further punished with some Reds supporters undoubtedly thinking back to their 3-3 draw at Sevilla in the Champions League group stage.

What next?

Liverpool have a three-goal cushion ahead of the return trip to Rome. However, Barcelona held a 4-1 lead in the Champions League quarter-finals before AS Roma were stunning 3-0 winners against the La Liga giants. The job isn’t done.

Hopefully, Jurgen Klopp’s side can avoid conceding an early goal at Stadio Olimpico. Gabriel Jesus netted in the second minute of Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Manchester City to give the Reds an uncomfortable first half.
