Liverpool ace Dominik Szoboszlai shares update after horror Hungary incident left him in tears
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has admitted he experienced a “rough night” on Saturday after one of Hungary’s assistant coaches collapsed during their 4-0 Nations League defeat to the Netherlands.
The match was stopped for 13 minutes when Adam Szalai was taken ill in the seventh minute. Captain Szoboszlai was left in tears as the 36-year-old received medical attention while privacy sheets were held up around the former international.
Szalai - who featured for his country alongside Szoboszlai on many occasions before retiring in 2023 - was rushed to hospital but later wrote on Facebook: “Thanks for the lots of messages, I'm doing well.” The Hungary FA added on Friday that the former defender was "stable and conscious".

Writing the morning after, on Sunday, Szoboszlai took to Instagram to address the incident. “We are after a rough night,” he wrote. “The most important thing now is that Adam is well! We'll continue on Tuesday, together!”
Hungary host Germany in their final Nations League tie on Tuesday. Germany’s 7-0 thrashing of bottom side Bosnia & Herzegovina means Hungary can no longer be relegated from the top tier of the Nations League.
A goal difference deficit of 13 means they are unlikely to pinch a quarter-final spot from the Dutch in second-place ahead of Tuesday’s final round of matches. Liverpool face Southampton on Sunday.
Speaking about Szalai after Hungary's defeat in Amsterdam, Szoboszlai said: “It was difficult. We started well, but we lost our minds a little because of what happened.”
This is not the first time Szoboszlai and Hungary were left distressed by a medical incident during a match this year. The team saw Barnabas Varga sustain a worrying head injury during their dramatic 1-0 win over Scotland at Euro 2024, which also left Szoboszlai emotional.
Varga was also sent to hospital but has made a full recovery and scored against Tottenham in the Europa League for domestic club Ferancvaros in October. He was on the pitch when Szalai was taken unwell on Saturday.
The match had restarted via a VAR check that eventually awarded a penalty to the Netherlands. Former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst stepped up to net the opener and celebrated by performing a knee slide.
Netherlands skipper and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk dismissed the suggestion that this was disrespectful in light of what had happened with Szalai. "I didn't think the celebration was exaggerated at all,” he argued.
“Hungary made the choice to continue playing. Then you get on with playing the match.”
Van Dijk described the medical episode as "very scary" and added: "I hope [Szalai] is doing well and that he can recover well. This is the most important thing now.
“I think it shows a lot of strength that they [Hungary players] wanted to continue. A lot of respect for that.”
Weghorst himself insisted that he “never thought for a moment” that his celebration could come across as “unpleasant”. He added: "In retrospect, you think, 'would it have been more respectful to cheer less exuberantly?'
“Let it be clear that his life is more important than my goal. I hope I don't have to explain that to anyone.”
Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo later scored another penalty 12 minutes into stoppage time at the end of the first half, which had been added on due to the medical incident. Ryan Gravneberch played 79 minutes before being replaced. The Dutch face Bosnia on Tuesday.
