Liverpool are reportedly engineering themselves right to the front of the queue to sign an in-demand midfielder who has illustrated his qualities with some stellar displays for Morocco at the World Cup.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is expecting to make wholesale changes to his engine room over the next two transfer windows. With Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain heading for the exit door as free agents, other issues in their ranks make midfield their priority position.
Indeed, James Milner turns 37 in January and reports are growing this may finally prove his final season at Anfield. In addition, both Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson have both suffered with injuries this season with the pair now on the wrong side of 30.
To that end, Klopp is reportedly seeking at least two new signings in his midfield over the next two transfer windows. His No 1 target is well documented to be Jude Bellingham.
The England midfielder though will not come cheap. And with Borussia Dortmund likely to seek a fee of around £130m, Liverpool’s resources will be stretched fully. That might not leave too much room in the budget so it makes sense that their next midfield addition may prove to be on the more modest side.
One such name who would have ticked that box is Konrad Laimer. However, Liverpool’s hopes of snaring him from RB Leipzig appear to be fading amid claims he’s closing on a free-transfer switch elsewhere.
With their prospects of landing the Austrian fading fast, it’s little surprise to see Liverpool reportedly eyeing other options.
And per reports in Italy, they are nudging themselves to the front of the queue for an in-demand Fiorentina star.
Liverpool chasing deal for Sofyan Amrabat
The player in question is La Viola’s reliable midfield star Sofyan Amrabat.
The Moroccan has caught the eye with his displays this season for the Serie A side and has taken that form into the World Cup. And his performance in midfield helped the north African nation overcome Belgium 2-0 with Amrabat overshadowing Kevin De Bruyne in the process.
That performance has led to renewed speculation that Tottenham are keen to prise the player to London.
However, il Corriere dello Sport now claims that the chase to secure Amrabat’s signature is being led by Liverpool.
They write that Liverpool have been made aware by intermediaries that the 26-year-old’s deal, due to expire in summer 2024, only earns him wages of €1.8m a year. That equates to a mere £29,000 a week – and understandably the player is looking for a substantial pay rise.
And per il Corriere, the Reds are formulating a plan that could see the star treble his earnings by moving to Merseyside.
That sort of salary would put him beyond Fiorentina’s reach and, with just 18 months left on his deal, know a sizeable offer would leave them with little choice but to cash in.
Furthermore, with Liverpool able to offer the player Champions League football – for this season at least – the player is reportedly keen to make the move.
However, the report claims Amrabat would, in the first instance, allow Fiorentina to present an offer of their own to him.
But should they be unable to match it, a move to Anfield may well on the cards.
