Liverpool fans earned the respect of Cristiano Ronaldo and his family after a moving tribute from supporters in the form of a minute's applause after the passing of the then-Manchester United star's newborn son.

The news that the Portuguese forward had suffered a tragedy in his personal life emerged during the week of the clash between the Reds and their arch-rivals back in April 2022. The passing of his son during childbirth led to Ronaldo missing the game itself - while both teams wore black armbands in a show of unity.

After seven minutes of play, both sets of supporters then joined in with a moving round of applause as they showed their sympathy for the superstar's family after their loss. During this demonstration of solidarity between rival fans, one United supporter held aloft a shirt bearing Ronaldo's name and famous No. 7.

Meanwhile, Kopites led a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" as they showed their respect for the Manchester United icon after his heartbreak. Reflecting on this moment after a clip was posted of the applauds retrospectivelty on Reddit, one said: "This just shows how classy our fans are. Pretty proud of all of them.

In addition, a second said: "This is why I fell in love with this club, for what it represented, not for the type of football it played," while a third said: "I can't, and don't want to even imagine what him and his family were going through. Just shows that humanity trumps football rivalry every second of the day."

Thanking the Liverpool fans for their support at such a difficult time for his family, Ronaldo later said on Instagram: "One world... One sport... One global family... Thanks, Anfield. Me and my family will never forget this moment of respect and compassion."

Ronaldo's sister Katia Aveiro also took to the social media site to pay tribute to the Reds supporters for their kind actions as she offered her own gratitude. She said: "Thank you for this Liverpool. We will never forget what you did today.

A statement issued by United also read: "While United and Liverpool share English football's greatest rivalry, there is a deep-rooted respect held between the two clubs and that will be highlighted by the minute’s applause, which was initially suggested by fans of the Merseyside team."

Then-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also emphasized the class shown by the club's supporters on the night as he also issued his condolences to Ronaldo. He said: "I'm pretty sure if you ask anybody about it, my moment of the game, even when it was very important and a great result, was the seventh minute when our people showed pure class.

"The whole stadium together showed pure class, in a moment where we obviously, everybody knew since yesterday, since I heard first time about it, so many things they are much more important in life than football. Obviously, we really feel for Cristiano and his family."
