Liverpool have been surprised by the recent claims surrounding Sadio Mane’s imminent future.

After months of speculation as to whether Mane could leave Anfield, having just completed his sixth season with the club, it was reported after the Champions League final that he had decided to depart.

The Senegalese teased an announcement on the situation and “the best answer you want to hear” when the game against Real Madrid was finished, but he has yet to clarify any claims and was not present in the mixed zone on Sunday morning for the Liverpool trophy parade.

It is claimed in the Daily Mail that Reds officials ‘were taken aback’ to hear that Mane had made his mind up to leave, considering ‘he has yet to tell them officially about his intentions’.

But ‘it is becoming increasingly clear…that a parting of the ways seems inevitable,’ and so Liverpool have decided upon a valuation of the 30-year-old forward.

16 Conclusions on the Champions League final: Liverpool 0 Real Madrid 1

The Reds are ‘adamant’ that no sale will happen unless they receive a bid of at least £35m, as they wish to recoup the £34m it took to sign him from Southampton in summer 2016.

Reports elsewhere, including from Sky Sports, claim that any offer would have to be ‘more than’ £35m.

Bayern Munich seems to be the most likely destination for Mane, who is said to be intrigued by the prospect of playing in Germany, with Sky Sport reporter Florian Plettenberg suggesting that ‘negotiations’ over a three-year deal had taken place.

Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked recently, while Real Madrid and Barcelona both hold an established interest.

Steven Gerrard, a Liverpool-born club legend and former captain who harbours clear hope of managing them in the future, cannot fathom why a man from Bambali, Senegal, whose association with the Reds has lasted barely more than half a decade, would want to leave.

“[Mo] Salah has already said that he is going to be here next year, I know there is a bit of noise around Mane,” Gerrard said before the Champions League final.

“But why would you want to leave this Liverpool team because you know that they are going to be competitive in the business end of the season?”

Because Bayern Munich are very good and would offer a completely different life and career experience to a footballer who will likely be signing his last major contract. And Robert Lewandowski might need replacing soon.
