Liverpool have reportedly made a club-record £85m bid for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

Nunez has been the subject of much transfer speculation this summer after an outstanding season for Benfica which saw him score 34 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions.

Manchester City were interested before they signed Erling Haaland, while a report on Wednesday claimed both Newcastle and Manchester United are ‘bidding’ for the 22-year-old, with the striker ‘intrigued’ by Erik ten Hag’s project at Old Trafford.

But in a sensational development, Portuguese outlet Record claim Liverpool have tabled an £85m bid, a transfer fee that would surpass the club-record move for Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January 2018.

That’s contrary to reports in England, which claim the Reds want to avoid a bidding war for the 22-year-old and have other targets in mind.

But with Sadio Mane set to depart this summer, Jurgen Klopp will want forward reinforcements and the report claims the Liverpool boss is ‘crazy’ about signing Nunez, who impressed him in games against his side in the Champions League this season.

After the striker scored home and away against the Reds, Klopp said: “Extremely good-looking boy. Really good, really good. He played pretty much in front of me, with his tough battles with Ibou Konate.

“Physically strong, quick, was calm with his finish. If he stays healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.”

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has urged his former club to go after the dynamic striker, as he described him as a “Klopp-type player”.

“I watched him three times in the space of six weeks. One thing I really liked about him was that he is dynamic,” Murphy said.

“He’s a very Klopp-type player with high energy, both with and without the ball. He doesn’t mind a press and saw him running back a few times.

“When he hasn’t got the ball, he doesn’t mind running in behind. He’s more of a number nine, he’s not going to play out wide.”
