The agent of Liverpool assistant coach John Heitinga has explained what it is like to negotiate with Reds sporting director Richard Hughes - and has shared a theory regarding why Mohamed Salah is yet to be offered a new deal by the club. Salah is out of contract at Anfield next summer and at the weekend went public with his disappointment at his current situation.

The 32-year-old revealed he is yet to reveal a formal offer from Liverpool after scoring a match-winning brace in the Reds’ 3-2 victory over Southampton on Sunday.

It is understood there remains a willingness on both sides to reach an agreeable conclusion with the discussions, which are ongoing with Salah's representative Ramy Abbas, and which are said to be positive and constructive.

And Heitinga’s agent Rob Jansen has offered his own insight on negotiating directly with Hughes after overseeing his client's move to Anfield last summer.

"He's new to the club and one thing Richard Hughes doesn’t have is any sense of empathy. Zero," he said on the Kieft Jansen Egmond Gijp podcast, quoted by Soccer News. “He’s a robot. I know that because I negotiated with him, for Heitinga.

"There’s zero feelings in him. That may well be the reason. Especially with a player like Salah, who has emotion, has a different culture and is sensitive to warmth."
